Makarova heads Sofia field in final week of action

The WTA season is all but done. There is a great tournament this week though, the WTA Tournament of Champions, which gets a bit overlooked.

It is the understudy even of the WTA Tour Finals, which were won by Serena Williams on the weekend. The WTA Tour Finals is contested between the eight players who have amassed the most Tour points in the season. The Tournament of Champions is for six players who have won a WTA title this year, but didn’t qualify for the WTA Tour Finals. Two wildcards also get their spot.

Simona Halep, who lost in the WTA Tour Finals on the weekend against Serena Williams won this last year, so it is a tournament which showcases future talent. The tournament is being played in Sofia, Bulgaria, and who do we have on the card for your WTA Tournament of Champions tennis betting?

It is Ekaterina Makarova who is edging things at the head of the betting market as 4/1 favourite with online bookmaker Paddy Power.

The tournament is split into two Round Robin groups, the top two from each going through to the semi finals. What will help Makarova’s case here is that she is heading up the tougher of the two groups, as she takes on veteran Flavia Pennetta, as well as Alize Cornet and Garbine Muguruza. So if she tops the group, there will likely be an easy semi final and final ahead. It is likely that Russia’s Makarova, the world number eleven and a quarter finalist at Wimbledon and a semifinalist at the US Open, will be in the final four.

Over in the group, Dominika Cibulkova will be expected to come out on top. The diminutive powerhouse has been struggling for form though over the second half of the season, after being so dominant out of the 2014 gates on the WTA Tour. Still, she packs a punch and goes up against Andrea Petkovic, Carla Suarez Navarro, Tsvetana Pironkova.

Tough to find any great consistency of form from anyone here, but Bulgaria’s Pironkova has reached the quarters in her last two tournaments and could be a surprise semi finalist, especially with home support on her side. Tough to see anyone other than Cibulkova being a genuine title shot from the second group though.

Good tournament action here and the action does look as if it will be pretty competitive in Sofia. It may be a case of who can stop Makarova though.
