Monaco v Tottenham Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 22nd November

Tough game for Spurs here because Monaco only need a point to get through to the knockout stage of the competition. Tottenham are in a spot of bother here after losing two home games in the group including one against Monaco. If they lose against the French outfit again and Bayer Leverkusen avoid defeat in their game on Tuesday, then Tottenham would only have the UEFA Europa League to play for. So they really need to setup and and produce a big away performance here. Do the Premier League outfit have enough fight to pull through this one?

Monaco v Tottenham Betting Tips

The French side are in the driving seat in the group, heading into match day five topping it out. They have taken four points from their two home fixtures in the UEFA Champions League this season so far. When they went to face Spurs at Wembley on Match Day One, Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar netted the sucker punch goals to give Monaco an important 2-1 away win. That leaves the head to head between Monaco and Spurs even at one win each and one draw. Last season in the Europa League these two were together, with Spurs winning 4-1 at White Hart Lane and playing out a 1-1 draw in France in what was the first competitive meeting between the two. A draw won’t be enough for Spurs if Leverkusen win on Tuesday. Monaco hold a home record of W3 D2 L2 against English clubs (overall W7 D4 L4).

Radamel Falcao has been in decent form lately and he has actually scored six goals in nine Champions League starts. He is trading at a price of 11/8 in the anytime goalscorer market for this one. Tottenham need any crack in Monaco to get themselves into this game and it could be through the French defence. Monaco have taken just one clean sheet in their last 10 games against English clubs in all competitions and both teams to score at Bet365 is at 4/5. Monaco are a good home side though and have only lost two of their last 19 Champions League home games (W13 D4) and you have to go all the way back to 2000 to find their last instance of a home defeat. At the Louis II Stadium, Monaco have five clean sheets in their last seven Champions League matches as well. You can take a price of 3/4 at Bet365 on this going under 2.5 goals while Monaco to win to nil in the fixture is a price of 10/3.

So Tottenham really are on the ropes a bit in this one. What makes their task even more difficult against a good home side, is that Tottenham have never won an away game against French opposition in all competitions (D3 L1). The damaging losses at Wembley against Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen have really set them back tremendously, because this was a group many would have expected the Premier League side to be winning. But out on the road they haven’t conceded a goal in their two games so far. Tottenham’s record in nine matches against French opposition is W4 D3 L2 (W0 D3 L1 in France). Tottenham have failed to score more than one goal in each of their last eight UEFA Champions League games now and despite having 52 shots in the group so far, have only managed the two goals so far.

How they need Harry Kane to step up in this one. No other player in the Tottenham ranks has really stepped up for the club in the recent absence of Kane, but he is back now and has netted three goals in two games since getting back from injury. Kane is 7/4 in the Bet365 anytime goalscorer market. Tottenham basically have to at least match whatever Bayer Leverkusen do on the night to keep themselves in the race, but everything is still out of their hands. Tottenham, thanks to Kane, earned a dramatic win over West Ham in the Premier League on the weekend, but that has been their only victory in their last eight games played (W1 D5 L2). It’s not been clinical enough stuff from them recently, so will that hurt them again?

Monaco v Tottenham Predictions

Tottenham really need a big hero on the night and that is most likely to be Harry Kane. They have missed his goals in the Group Stage campaign, but still, even with that said, it’s hard to see Tottenham rolling out with the win that they need in this one. Monaco are a good enough home side not to let the chance of the point that they need to secure qualification slip through their fingers. Look for the draw in the match outright and a repeat of the 1-1 correct score from last season’s meeting at the Louis II Stadium looks value.
