Preview: Able to call upon a host of important first-team personnel for Saturday’s Ligue 1 at Stade Raymond Kopa, will we see a third straight competitive win for Mauricio Pochettino as PSG manager when the French champions pay Angers a visit?

Angers – Le SCO seeking another big name scalp?

Stephane Moulin continues to exceed expectations as Les Noirs et Blancs manager. In March of last year, when football in the country was suspended and Ligue 1 2019/20 was officially and prematurely concluded, the team had just won three league games on the bounce to position themselves within two points of fifth-place Nice. They were essentially in the mix for Europa League qualification.

Undeterred, Angers (W9 D3 L7) are once more back in the mix for an unlikely stint in Europe. Sat seventh ahead of welcoming perennial Ligue 1 champions PSG to their Stade Raymond Kopa, a venue where they have endured some rather mixed results thus far (W4 D1 L4) but would claim victory against Marseille in their final fixture on home soil of 2020, Le SCO find themselves only three points off the top-five.

Last week’s 3-0 loss in Monaco has, however, checked their momentum garnered from back-to-back 2-1 triumphs over Marseille and Lille – two of the six teams currently above them in the table – either side of the New Year. That a second defeat in eight Ligue 1 games for Moulin’s European aspirants, whose record in this particular fixture is nonetheless wretched: after 12 Ligue 1 meetings, they are yet to win (D2 L10).

PSG – French Super Cup a taster of things to come?

Life in Paris for Mauricio Pochettino may have begun a little dubiously after his new side immediately dropped points away to St Etienne. However, it would take him the very next fixture to register his maiden victory as PSG coach, doing so at Parc des Princes no less following a straightforward 3-0 scoreline against Stade Brest, while the Argentine wouldn’t have to wait much longer for his first piece of silverware.

Wednesday’s Trophee des Champions triumph is unlikely to quench the former Espanyol, Southampton and Tottenham manager’s thirst for major honours – it is, after all, a mere curtain raiser in most seasons – but it can serve as an appetiser for the season ahead. Clinching a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title will be the minimum requirement in 2020/21, and, for once, Les Parisiens could have a fight on their hands.

PSG (W12 D3 L4) remain a point adrift of leaders Lyon after 19 rounds. Unfamiliar territory for a club more accustomed to pummelling rivals into submission. Yet there are signs the men from Paris could come to the fore anytime soon. Key players are returning, namely Neymar, while they are also back to their miserly best. That untidy concession in Poch’s dugout debut the only goal conceded in five Ligue 1 matches (W3 D2).

Angers Vs PSG Betting Advice

As impressive as Angers’ ascent in Ligue 1 has been this season, they were brought down to earth last time out in Monaco and could be set for a further reality check on Saturday. PSG have not lost any of the fourteen prior meetings between these sides, prevailing on no fewer than twelve occasions including each of the past ten. Their winning margin across those aforementioned ten encounters averaging out at 2.7 goals.

Angers Vs PSG – Key Facts:

  • Prior to losing 3-0 away to Monaco in their latest Ligue 1 fixture, Angers had recorded back-to-back 2-1 victories over Marseille (6th) and Lille (3rd).
  • PSG are unbeaten in their last five Ligue 1 matches (W3 D2), a run which seen them concede only once, however, they have won only one of the last four away (W1 D2 L1).
  • The previous 14 competitive meetings between the clubs have garnered 12 wins for PSG and none for Angers, who were thrashed 6-1 in Paris earlier in the season.

The fact PSG have recorded one away win across their last four such fixtures is a concern. Although Mauricio Pochettino is at the helm now, and he has the luxury of having the likes of Presnel Kimpembe, Leandro Parades, Danilo, Mauro Icardi and, in particular, Neymar back available. Therefore, don’t be surprised if Les Parisiens embark on another goal spree similar to their 6-1 scoreline in the reverse fixture held in Paris last October.
