Antalyaspor Preview – Recent resurgence cause for optimism?
Four wins and three draws from their last seven Turkish Super Lig matches has breathed a new lease of life into Antalyaspor (12th – W6 D9 L10) in their bid to avoid relegation. The club have spent each of the past four terms at this level, even finishing a more than respectable seventh last season to barely miss out on qualification for Europe, but will have feared the worst in the middle of January.
Back then all hope appeared lost when, after failing to record any victory over a lengthy three month period comprising of eleven frustrating rounds of league fixtures (D3 L8), the club languished in the bottom three of the standings. Spending a longer duration at the Super Lig summit than most so far, Sivasspor (4th – W14 D7 L4) had genuine reason to believe that a first top-flight title in their history could materialise at the end of the season. Like any team over the course of a long and arduous campaign, particularly one which had been riding the crest of a wave for a long time, there are going to be bumps in the road.
A rough patch of form either side of February, when only two points from twelve were taken (D2 L2), had threatened to derail their earlier efforts. However, the team from Sivas, in central Turkey, appear to have ridden out the worst off it and have subsequently reeled off two wins – over Alanyaspor (1-0) and Ankaragucu (0-3) – along with a creditable 2-2 draw at home to the defending champions, Galatasaray, to hold firm in fourth.
Still within striking distance (3 points) of leaders Trabzonspor, there should be no let up here. Yet Sivasspor, despite boasting the fourth-strongest away figures in the division (W5 D3 L4), have proven to be more vulnerable on their travels. All four of their defeats over the course of the campaign were sustained on the road, while no team inside the top-eight concedes more often (1.58 per away game). That being said, no team in the entire league betters them in the away scoring stakes (23 from 12 games).
