Preview: It has been almost thirty years since Arsenal last lifted this trophy, for Liverpool a mere nine. Nevertheless, it is a competition neither have made much inroads in of late, something both can put right at the Emirates as this EFL Cup semi-final resumes with the scoreline still locked at 0-0.

Arsenal – Gunners quietly confident ahead of Emirates return leg?

Advantage Arsenal. That spirited display in the first leg makes Mikel Arteta’s side slight favourites in the eyes of many, but not the bookmakers who still have them as 2/1 to win the contest inside ninety minutes. A combination of formidable home record and a week’s worth of recuperation, with the FA controversially granting the Gunners’ request to have last Sunday’s North London derby postponed, could prove crucial.

At the Emirates this season, Arsenal have only been beaten on one occasion in all competitions, winning 10 of 11 outings in front of their fans prior to the 2-1 loss to runaway league leaders Man City at the beginning of January. All but three of those victories were accompanied by a clean sheet; failing to win on two of the five occasions in which this resolute defence was breached at home this campaign (D1 L1).

Key Stat: Having ended 2021 in sparkling form, scoring 19 times at a rate of nearly four per game as they won their final five encounters, Arsenal haven’t actually won a match in 2022 (D1 L2).

Liverpool – Improvement needed from Klopp’s depleted attack?

Work to do for the eight-time League Cup winners. After they were frustrated by the ten men of Arsenal first time around, the Reds may well fell they have something to prove on their return to the Emirates. It is a ground which has not served them well in recent times, though, with it one win in ten at this ground prior to last season’s 3-0 Premier League triumph in North London – a game that was 0-0 with an hour gone.

Recent form has also been spotty to put it mildly. Victory over Brentford last weekend was only their second in seven matches (D4 L1). More encouraging for Jurgen Klopp, it is now successive clean sheets for a backline which had gone six without any. Chances were at a premium for the Reds last week, but they were much improved at the weekend and must continue in that vein to reach a first EFL Cup final since 2016.

Key Stat: Liverpool have conceded the game’s opening goal in five of their past eight matches. However, only one of these contests resulted in a loss (W2 D2 L1 in these games) and they did defy 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to progress on penalties against Leicester City in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

With no fixture since last week’s first leg stalemate, Arsenal should undoubtedly be the fresher of the two sides. Then again, Liverpool would secure a morale boosting 3-0 victory over the weekend. Meanwhile the no-show from the Gunners leaves them still searching for their first win of 2022; a shock 1-0 loss away to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and a cruel 2-1 defeat at home to Man City preceding the Anfield result.

Arsenal Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Arsenal haven’t beaten Liverpool inside 90 minutes in any of their past six meetings in all competitions (D3 L3), but lost just two of the last ten as hosts (W4 D4).
  • The Emirates has returned to being a fortress this season. In 2021-22 so far, Arsenal are an impressive W10 D1 L1 as hosts in all competitions.
  • Conversely, Liverpool are winless on the road in three (D2 L1) but still bring an outstanding record of W11 D3 L2 when playing away from home this season.

Arsenal have thrived playing at home this season but especially in this competition, winning all three said fixtures versus AFC Wimbledon, Leeds and Sunderland by an aggregate of 10-1. Liverpool are a totally different proposition, though, even if they have toiled on their travels of late (D2 L1). None of the previous four contests between these teams produced Both Teams to Score and this could be a similarly tense affair.
