Arsenal – Gunners back firing on all cylinders?

The Gunners begin their defence of the FA Cup they won last August, after a deserved come-from-behind victory against London rivals Chelsea, with a home tie versus Newcastle United in one of only two all-Premier League encounters taking place in the third round over the weekend. Fortunately for Arsenal, their record at this stage of the competition, as well as against said opposition, happen to be exemplary.

Since 1983/84, when they were dumped out in the third round by Middlesbrough, Arsenal have progressed beyond this stage in 31 of 32 subsequent seasons. Meanwhile, last season saw them crowned FA Cup winners for the fourth times across the past seven seasons, helping to consolidate them as the most successful club in the competition’s long history – their 14 triumphs two more than next best Man Utd.

Furthermore, the Gunners boast a formidable record over Newcastle, against whom they have won all but one of the last 15 encounters between the clubs, winning all of the last eight held in the capital. Factor in this team’s recent resurgence, recording three consecutive wins when previously managing none in their seven prior domestic matches, and there is plenty to like about Mikel Arteta’s men.

Newcastle – Fifth consecutive fourth round appearance beyond them?

After seeing their winless run in the Premier League stretched further still to five matches with last Sunday’s 2-1 loss at St James’ Park to Leicester City, the FA Cup might have offered Steve Bruce and his ailing Newcastle side with some respite. After all, this stage of the tournament is often littered with big versus small, top-flight versus lower league. This year, however, the Magpies appear to have lucked out.

A trip to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal, in a fixture they have lost all eight renewals when played here in North London since a 1-0 success in 2010, would look troublesome at the best of times. Now, though, they must compete against a team with renewed vigour and belief following three straight wins whereas Newcastle, beaten 1-0 at Brentford in the EFL Cup last month, have forgotten how to win at all.

It has, however, been four straight seasons reaching the FA Cup fourth round, culminating in last season’s quarter-final run where they were eliminated by Man City after a 2-0 loss on Tyneside. That run would appear to be in real jeopardy with Newcastle in such poor form in general, but especially on their travels, registering one win in the last eight away matches (W1 D3 L4) having lost each of the past three.

Arsenal Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

There is much to like about Arsenal at the moment, not least their upturn in performances and results. But while this is clearly a competition they tend to thrive in, can a team which spent most of 2020/21 labouring from one abject display to another really be trusted at such short odds? They should, however, ease past a Newcastle side currently without a win in six competitive matches.

Arsenal Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • Just the one goal conceded across Arsenal‘s recent three-game winning streak. Furthermore, they have only exited the FA Cup third round once in the past 32 seasons.
  • Four consecutive fourth round FA Cup appearances for Newcastle is under real threat, with the North East outfit without a win in their last six competitive matches (D2 L4).
  • Newcastle have only won one of the pair’s last 15 meetings, losing the other 14, while they have lost all eight in North London since a 1-0 win in 2010.

Arsenal should prevail although I doubt it will be in the manner which seen them net four in victory last time out against West Brom. Newcastle will try to remain compact and wait for moments to break, which could see them frustrate a home side that had averaged a paltry 0.4 goals per game before their recent three-game winning spell. Moreover, four of the Magpies’ last five matches have gone Under 2.5 Goals.
