Looking at Atlanta United first, and they sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference but could leapfrog Orlando City into fourth spot if they take all three points this evening. The hosts have registered back-to-back wins in the MLS recently with wins over Colorado Rapids and Columbus Crew, and they hold a reasonable home record too.
Atlanta have won their last four on the trot at their Bobby Dodd Stadium, scoring a total of 11 goals for and conceding just 3 in reply amidst an overall home record of 5-0-2 17/8. They’ll also be confident of taking the points with the likes of Martinez (7 goals) and Villalba (8 goals) up front.
Visitors San Jose Earthquakes will be hoping they can create some fireworks of their own amidst the national celebrations when they make their way to Atlanta as they too head into this encounter having recorded back-to-back wins over Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy respectively.
However, both of these recent successes came at their Avaya Stadium where they’ve suffered just one defeat so far in the Western Conference, but as is the case for many teams in the MLS (due to the number of internal long-haul flights within America), they possess an under-par away record.
San Jose’s record on the road stands at 2-1-5 4/11 and only Colorado Rapids (2 goals) have scored fewer than them away from home in the Conference to date. Indeed, San Jose have failed to score in 4 of their 8 away matches so far this season.
