Sunday wraps up this weekend’s MLS action and my next pick sees Eastern Conference league leaders, Atlanta United, take on Western Conference strugglers, Seattle Sounders, at their Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia.
Atlanta United will be desperate to hang onto top spot in the Eastern Conference, especially with New York City just three points behind and breathing down their necks, but Atlanta come into this clash in pretty solid form as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last eight matches overall.
That defeat was a 3-2 loss away at Dallas, but they return to home turf for this encounter where they’ve posted a record of 6-2-2 27/12 to date, and they’ve been fired along during this campaign by in-form striker, Martinez (18 goals) who has received valuable support from Almiron (8 goals, 9 assists).
Seattle Sounders still reside in the bottom half of the Western Conference despite staging something of a ‘mini revival’ following a win at Colorado Rapids and a point at New England Evolution. However, these results have been gained against teams that haven’t been as impressive this season as Atlanta United.
Seattle have actually posted just two wins from their last nine matches overall, while their results away from home have seen them record just two wins from their last ten road trips; their away record this season stands at a disappointing 2-2-5 7/13.
In addition, Seattle have failed to score in 5 of their 9 away matches so far this season, and this lack of firepower up front could once again hold them back when they face a superior looking Atlanta United who aren’t shy in front of goal.
