Preview: With wins on all three prior visits to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, hope springs eternal for the Columbus Crew as they resume their pursuit for this season’s first away victory. Caleb Porter’s side can expect a fair amount of resistance, though, in the shape an Atlanta United outfit yet to taste defeat here in Atlanta, Georgia.

Atlanta United – Five Stripes to buck drawing trend?

Back to back stalemates has left The Five Stripes marooned in mid-table, in seventh, in the MLS Eastern Conference. Which, by all accounts – those being the superb folk who cover the league on the official MLS website, but also Infogol, whose Expected Goals metric ranks them ninth of fourteen in the east division – is roughly where they deserve to be. Their record through the opening 12 matches reads W4 D4 L4.

Head coach Gonzalo Pineda has seen his side go unbeaten so far at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where they would net at least twice in all six outings (W3 D3) with the exception of their goalless encounter against FC Cincinnati. That equates to 14 goals in all, for an average of 2.33 per game in front of their home support in Atlanta, Georgia. And yet, that aforementioned 0-0 still stands as their sole home clean sheet.

Key Stat: There has been three or more goals in each of Atlanta United’s five previous MLS matches. In addition, five of six home games this season featured at least three goals but also both teams scoring.

Columbus Crew – Maiden away win proving elusive?

The Crew’s wretched run continued into the latest round, as a Carlos Vela inspired Los Angeles FC rolled into Lower.com Field and departed with the most routine of 2-0 scorelines. It marked a second loss in quick succession for Caleb Porter’s beleaguered men, having also gone down by the exact same scoreline at New York City FC a week earlier, making it one win in their last nine MLS outings (W1 D3 L5).

If that recent form – or lack thereof – wasn’t enough of a concern for would-be Columbus Crew backers, then how about a six-game rolling winless away record (D4 L2). Porter may well argue his side only gave up two losses in those contests, but the fact remains they are one of seven sides still to chalk up their first road victory in 2022. Moreover, they would fail to even notch a goal in three of the past four said fixtures.

Key Stat: It has been a mixed bag on the goal front with this Columbus Crew outfit, whose six away matches thus far has seen a 50% return for Both Teams Scoring but only 33% go over 2.5 on goals.

Atlanta United Vs Columbus Crew Betting Advice

I really don’t think you can go too far wrong with a punt on the draw. For starters, the hosts are coming off successive stalemates. Following up a 2-2 scoreline here against New England Revolution with another away in Nashville. Furthermore, half of Atlanta’s home matches this term resulted in the points being shared. It is a statistic Columbus Crew can better, the visitors drawing four of their six away matches thus far.

Atlanta United VS Columbus Crew – Key Facts:

  • A 3-2 victory for Atlanta United when the teams last met, in August of last year, marked the end of The Crew’s dominance in this fixture. Columbus Crew having previously won four meetings on the trot, as well as the past three at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
  • The last two encounters between the sides here in Atlanta, Georgia, produced 1-0 victories for the visiting team. However, there has been an abundance of goals in Atlanta United’s home matches this season, with five of six seeing Over 2.5 Goals.
  • This doesn’t really align with what Columbus Crew have been doing on their travels this season. Caleb Porter’s men are without a goal in three of the last four away fixtures, with all three of these contests seeing Under 2.5 Goals.

Yet there has been a drawn head-to-head in nearly five years. Even more surprising, however, has to be the recent dominance of this fixture by The Crew, winning four successive meetings – and each of the three previous held here at Mercedes-Benz Stadium – prior to a 3-2 home loss in August of last year. Their record is such that odds of 10/11 about the visitors avoiding defeat start to look promising.
