Atlanta United – Frustrations starting to boil over?

When both captain and coach are in agreement regarding a lack of fight amongst the collective, you know all is not right within the team. Neither Josef Martinez – the team’s talisman and one of the biggest starts in MLS – or head coach Gonzalo Pineda, fast approaching a year in charge, held back in their assessment of last Saturday’s 3-0 home loss to Austin FC which left The Five Stripes languishing 11th in the East.

The loss, which was thoroughly deserved in line with Infogol’s xG (ATA 1.02 – 2.61 AUS) marked a third in four league outings for Atlanta United, who are now at serious risk of missing out on post-regular season action for the second time in three seasons. Since mid-April they have won only two of 13 MLS matches (W2 D4 L7) – though both were at their Mereceds-Benz Stadium, where they next face Real Salt Lake.

Key Stat: Atlanta United would only fail to score once across their last 11 MLS fixtures, which was in their 3-0 loss at home to Austin FC last time out.

 

 

Real Salt Lake – Pablo Mastroeni’s men running out of steam?

The outlook from an RSL perspective isn’t a whole lot rosier. Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Colorado Rapids extended their winless run to three, collecting two points from the last nine available to fall nine points back from Western Conference leaders Los Angeles FC in third. A return to the form that had seen them register five victories across a seven-game stretch from late April to mid-June is sorely needed.

They certainly have the fixtures with which to do so. Three of the next four opponents rank no better than 11th in either conference, before a showdown in Salt Lake City versus LAFC on August 7. It’s an appealing run. Beginning in Atlanta where RSL will be out to improve upon a dismal away record, winning two of ten (D3 L5) thus far having sustained back to back away defeats in Vancouver and Minnesota recently.

Key Stat: Real Salt Lake have conceded 2+ goals in five out of ten MLS away games in 2022, while failing to score themselves in fifty per cent of these games.

Atlanta United Vs Real Salt Lake

Just a fourth meeting between the clubs, and only the second staged in Atlanta, sees Atlanta United targetting a third head-to-head win having prevailed in their only encounter here at Merecedes-Benz Stadium (2-0 in September 2018). Real Salt Lake scored a 2-1 win the last time they met. However, with neither bringing any sort of positive momentum into this latest duel, a maiden H2H draw appeals.

 

 

Firstly, I am running cold on my tips. That disclaimer out the way, I would be very surprised if either of these teams came away from Atlanta in midweek with their clean sheets in tact. Atlanta United would shut out just one of the last 11 opponents (MLS games only) and allowed 2+ goals in nine. RSL have fare better on clean sheets, with three in their previous six, but kept only two from ten road outings so far.
