Barcelona Preview – Will Barca get the better of Atleti again this season and make it a third El Clasico of the season?

Champions Barcelona have the prospect of winning another trophy as they prepare to face Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup. Clearly it’s not their main priority for the season but it’s a piece of silverware nevertheless. Ernesto Valverde – who has come in for a lot of criticism for failing to win trophies – knows the value of it better than anybody. It was a disappointing return to action for Barca following a mini-winter break. A 2-2 draw away to Espanyol means Real Madrid were able to go level on points with them at the top of La Liga. It looks very likely that they will be challenged all the way by Zidane’s men this time around. With three straight draws in La Liga Barcelona know they have to improve results when they return to league action.
This is a competition that Barca have had mixed fortunes in, in recent times. They were victorious last season when beating Sevilla, as they were in 2016. They have also suffered heavy aggregate losses to Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, however. It’s testament to their dominance of Spanish football that they have contested each of the last four finals. Obviously, with this being a different format this year, they are one game away from making it a fifth appearance in as many years.

Atletico Madrid to win on penalties

Atletico Madrid Preview – Can Atleti secure victory to face their city rivals in this weekend’s final?

There’s no question that Diego Simeone is a winner and it means he, as much as anybody, will want to go all the way and clinch the Super Cup. He will also be hoping that any success his team have here can spark something for the remainder of the campaign. Atletico have been underwhelming for long spells of this season and they have not been able to take advantage of Barcelona and Real Madrid stuttering along. They do come into this game on the back of four straight wins (three in La Liga and one in the Champions League) which is their best run of form this season. It’s a run which means they are now only five points behind the top two and still in with a chance of the title.

Angel Correa may not be the most glamorous of names in the Atleti squad but it’s been his contribution which has been so important in the last two league games. The Argentinian has scored twice and and assisted another of Atleti’s last four goals helping them earn a crucial six points. He will look to continue that sort of production as he comes up against his fellow countryman.

Key-Facts – Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid

  • Barcelona would have wanted to start 2020 in better fashion having dropped two points in the derby with Espanyol at the weekend
  • Atletico have been disappointing for large parts of this season but may see this as an opportunity to revive their campaign and get a confidence boost ahead of more significant games to come
  • It was a wonder goal from Lionel Messi which separated the teams at the Wanda Metropolitano in early December

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Betting Advice

Games between these two clubs are also full of intensity and competitive affairs. It was a piece of brilliance from Messi which gave Barca the three points when they met at the beginning of last month in a 1-0 win. Indeed, goals have been at a premium in recent games between the two. Over the last eight meetings there have only been 13 scored. Logic would suggest that we’ll see another tight contest with little to choose between the pair on Thursday.
Sunday’s final is going to be a must-watch regardless of who wins this game. We’re either set for a Madrid derby or another instalment of El Clasico. Recent history shows that Simeone is good at nullifying Barcelona’s threat and setting his team up in a way which frustrates the champions. In their current form they can do so again and it would be no surprise to see this game go beyond the 90 minutes in search for a winner.
