Beijing Guoan Preview – Standards have slipped over recent weeks?
Former Lyon manager Bruno Genesio could not have wished for a better start to the 2020 Chinese Super League season for his Beijing Guoan side. Victorious across all four of their initial contests, they have since failed to win in three attempts to fall behind the new Group B leaders Shanghai SIPG – who could effectively be six points clear come kick-off minus any slip-up on Monday at home to rock-bottom Tianjin Teda.
Guoan’s strong opening came about on the back of beating Chongqing Lifan first time out, when not even a first-half red card for defender Yu Fang proved enough of a handicap for last season’s valiant runners-up. Beijing Guoan would subsequently score twice, defying the numerical advantage to claim a hard-fought 2-1 success that would precede victories over Wuhan Zall (1-0), Tianjin Teda (1-3) and Hebei (3-1).
Since then, however, ‘The Imperial Guards’ have looked decidedly more vulnerable, dropping points in each of their following three match-ups with Qingdao Huang (3-3), Shanghai SIPG (1-2) and Shijiazhuang (2-2). A dip in form which has cost them top spot, with the loss at home to Shanghai SIPG especially damaging. Genesio will therefore pin his hopes of another Chongqing Lifan victory sparking a similarly prosperous run.
Congqing Lifan Preview – Toothless attack hampering top-four aspirations?
With the top four teams in either group moving on to the Championship Stage, Chongqing Lifan, at the midway stage of proceedings in Group B, are at risk of not making the cut after a less than impressive campaign so far. Manager Chang Woe-ryong has only masterminded the one win in seven and the South Korean is under pressure to make inroads into the five-point deficit currently separating his side from the top-four.
Losing last time out to Shanghai SIPG could hardly count as a surprise – they were facing a top side, as well as the current section leaders, in their own backyard – but the manner of the loss was concerning, particularly as it came so soon after what should have been a morale-boosting first win of the season at home to Shijiazhuang (1-0). The 3-0 scoreline represented their heaviest loss since the season got underway.
Scoring was again their downfall last time out, as has been the case all too often. Since netting in their first three encounters, Chongqing Lifan have found the net only once – in that aforementioned triumph over Shijiazhuang, who are in direct competition for a spot in the top-four – in four subsequent Super League games, losing without scoring on each of their latest two away outings against Wuhan Zall (2-0) and Shanghai SIPG.

The Group B table would imply there is a marked difference in quality between the two teams with eight points separating a Beijing Guoan side in pursuit of their fifth win of the season and a Chongqing Lifan boasting a miserly one win so far.
