It’s matchday 3 in the German domestic second tier starting on Friday night, and my next pick looks at Eintracht Braunschweig taking on Erzgebirge Aue at their Eintracht-Stadion, with the hosts looking to build upon their encouraging start to the new season.
Braunschweig are hoping to go one step better this term following on from their disappointing end to last season which saw them lose out 2-0 on aggregate to Bundesliga side, Wolfsberg, in the promotion/relegation play-off, so they need to gain a top two position this time around to ensure promotion to the top flight.
The hosts have made a solid start, gaining a point in a 2-2 draw away at Fortuna Dusseldorf, which they followed up with a a 2-0 home win over Heidenheim a couple of weeks ago, although they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at newcomers Holsten Kiel in the DFB Pokal last weekend.
Visitors Erzgebirge Aue narrowly avoided the dreaded relegation play-off spot at the end of last season as they finished three points above 1860 Munich despite a 1-0 defeat away at Fortuna Dusseldorf on the final day of the season.
Erzgebirge haven’t started their new campaign in positive fashion either as they’ve lost both of their opening games against Fortuna Dusseldorf (at home) and Heidenheim (away), which, interestingly, were both opponents of Braunschweig too, but with very different results!
The visitors finished last season with a poor away record of 3-5-9 16/28 and they’ve lost their last four away matches on the trot overall, conceding 8 goals and scoring just 2 in reply.
