The group stage of the Scottish League Cup begins this week and Brechin City’s manager Mark Wilson faces off against the club he made his name as Dundee United are the visitors.

Brechin City Preview – Could Wilson lead his team to shock win over his former club?

Brechin are one of the teams who benefited most from curtailing of the previous campaign as it meant they stayed in League Two without having to contend with a relegation playoff. Brechin were the bottom club in the division and by some distance, too. The hope is that Mark Wilson has been able to use the seven months between their last competitive action and this game to ensure they are much more competitive in the season ahead.

Seven points adrift of their nearest rival and conceding on average more than two goals a game tells it’s own story. And highlight one of they key issues that Brechin have to improve on.

Wilson – who had two spells at Dundee United and started his career there – has a big job ahead of him and will be working with a very young squad in the main. An exception to that is Martin Scott who came in towards the end of last season. The midfielder has a wealth of experience at this level.
This is the first of two games against Premiership opposition for Brechin who travel to St Johnstone at the weekend. They then face Peterhead before their League Two campaign begins with a home game against Edinburgh City.

Dundee United Preview – Can United get their cup campaign off to a winning start?

Following promotion to the Premiership and the appointment of Micky Mellon as manager, the first weeks of the season were always going to be interesting for Dundee United. And so it’s proved. Overall it’s been a positive start return after four years away. United have picked up 11 points from 10 games and that has them sitting nicely in seventh spot – one of four teams with that points total.

If they can maintain that sort of form then they will be clear of relegation worries and could even challenge for the top six which would be a great success for a promoted team. There was some disappointment with Friday’s loss at home to Livingston. Especially after they were a goal up at half time.

United have moved to restore the good feeling at the club with the signing of Marc McNulty on loan. He joins from Reading after a couple of spells on loan at Hibernian and is more than capable of contributing the goals United have been lacking.

Despite having last season’s Championship top scorer Lawrence Shankland in their ranks the Arabs are averaging less than a goal a game in the league. It’s clearly an area Mellon has tried to strengthen and this signing does that.

Brechin City vs Dundee United Betting Advice

This would also be a tough ask for Brechin considering the gap between the clubs but even more so considering this is their first competitive game since March whilst United are well into their league campaign. Wilson will know that the result is probably insignificant – not only in this game but the League Cup group stage as a whole. Instead it’s all about fitness for the home team.

His opposite number may well look to use this game to give McNulty his debut with the hope he’s up to speed for their next league game in 10 days.

Key Facts – Brechin City vs Dundee United Betting Tip

  • This will be Brechin’s first competitive game in exactly seven months
  • Dundee United come into this game on the back of just one win in their last six league games
  • Neither team were able to progress beyond the group stage of this competition last season

Anything other than an away win would be a huge surprise and not one I’m expecting. Brechin have had problems for a while defensively which will excite the likes of Shankland and McNulty. With the visitors extra quality and added match  sharpness I’m expecting them to win this by a few goals.
