These two had contrasting fortunes in the Football League playoffs with the end result being Brentford and Wycombe are in the same division now. It’s cup business first, however, in the first game at Brentford’s new stadium.

Brentford Preview – Are Brentford over their Wembley heartache and ready to go again?

It’s just over a month ago since Brentford were denied the chance of playing Premier League football for the first time. Falling at the final hurdle in defeat to Fulham in the playoff-final could either see the Bees suffer a hangover in this coming season or be further incentive to go one better. Of course, the impact was felt doubly hard because automatic promotion was in their own hands in the games before, too.

Thomas Frank will very much be hoping it’s the latter but he knows only too well how competitive the Championship is and they will have to be even better this time around with some of the teams dropping down from the top-flight.

Our betting prediction:
Both teams to score
3/4

Despite their impressive league campaigns Brentford have not been quite as good in the EFL Cup. They were knocked out by Cambridge United last season which was their fourth first round exit in five seasons. Clearly it’s not their main priority again but they will be hoping to get over that Wembley defeat at the first time of asking ahead of the league campaign starting next week.

Another reason all concerned with Brentford will want the victory is because it will be the first game at their new stadium having waved goodbye to Griffin Park last season.

Wycombe Preview – Can Wycombe build on their heroics of last season and start as they mean to go on?

Whilst Brentford would have been commiserating over the summer, Wycombe were at the other end of the playoff emotion spectrum. Gareth Ainsworth and his players have been celebrating making history by winning the club promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time in their history. It’s been an amazing job he’s overseen since returning to the club in 2014 and he’ll be hoping to continue surprising everybody else.

That was also Wycombe’s second promotion in three seasons – a record that Brentford will be extremely envious of considering their own struggles in that format.

It remains to be seen how Wycombe cope with that step up in standard but they have one of the smallest squads going into the new campaign and will again rely on a core group of players to see them through the season. A couple of new signings in the shape of Daryl Horgan and Uche Ikpeazu could make their debuts tomorrow.

Like Brentford, they have not enjoyed much success in the EFL Cup to put it lightly. Wanderers have won only one of their last eight first round ties.

Brentford vs Wycombe Betting Advice

These two clubs may be competing in the same division but their aspirations for the season are very different. Brentford are many people’s favourites to win the Championship whilst Wycombe are the heavy favourites to go straight back down. And the visitors could barely have asked for a more challenging start to the season in this competition.

The last time the teams faced each other was when competing in League One eight years ago and it was Brentford who came out on top in both matches.

Key Facts – Brentford vs Wycombe Betting Tip

  • Having come so close to winning promotion to the Premier League, Brentford cannot afford to start this season poorly
  • Wycombe were the surprise package of English football last season and will be playing in the second tier of English football for the first time in their history
  • This is the first competitive meeting between the sides since 2012 when both were in League One

Due to the differences in both clubs circumstances and the respective quality they have at their disposal it’s something of a surprise to see this game priced as it is. If this was a league game the price on the hosts would be very shorter.

It would be a shock if Brentford don’t win here and I’m happy to back them at the prices.
