Preview: In a fixture brought forward by several weeks, Brisbane Roar host Newcastle Jets for a second time in the 2019/20 A-League season having shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on Matchday 10. The Jets boast an impressive record on the road against The Roar, however, with last season’s 6-1 demolition their fourth away success in succession.

Brisbane Roar Preview – Fowler reaping benefits of move Down Under?

By all accounts, Robbie Fowler has taken to his new role Down Under as Brisbane Roar (4th – W9 D5 L7) head coach with ease. In only his first full term at the helm the former Liverpool idol already has the club well-placed in fourth, five points clear of the team in seventh and thus in a very strong position to qualify for the Final Series, which is due to get underway at the start of April.

For some context into what Fowler and his backroom staff have achieved thus far, The Roar endured a torrid 2018-19 A-League campaign in which the team would miss out on the Final Series by a staggering 22-points, finishing second bottom during the regular season. If anything, then, this group of players appear to only be getting better over time under the present regime.

After a slow start to the current term, Brisbane Roar have embarked on a run of seven wins in their past twelve matches, losing only twice. Victory this Friday, meanwhile, would represent their longest winning sequence of the season, having recently beaten both Western Sydney (3-1) and Central Coast (1-0). Both were at home, where they remain unbeaten in six, winning four, since a 2-0 loss to Western United in early December.

Newcastle Jets Preview – Jets still to lose under new manager?

Possibly one of the least surprising aspects of this season’s A-League has been the struggles of Newcastle Jets (9th – W6 D6 L9), who frequently come up short during the regular season and have left themselves with a mountain to climb if they are to partake in the end-of-season Final Series. However, recent results suggest a late-season revival is in progress.

Since 2011, the club have featured in the Final Series on a single occasion. They are, quite frankly, the perennial underachievers. Manager Carl Robinson, whose playing career involved stints in England with Portsmouth, Norwich and Sunderland, was installed in February to revive their ailing fortunes. On that front, his appointment has been an unmitigated success.

The Jets are still to taste defeat under new management, going six unbeaten (W3 D3) since the start of February to move back within six points of the top-six. Confidence will have soared following last week’s emphatic success away to Adelaide United, with a 3-0 scoreline marking their biggest margin of victory of the season but also just their second triumph away from home of the campaign (W2 D2 L6).

Brisbane Roar Vs Newcastle Jets Betting Advice

Fourth versus ninth at CBUS Super Stadium, which is not the natural home of Brisbane Roar who may well feel slightly aggrieved at having missed out on home advantage for this. Especially with their record on home turf an impressive W6 D2 L2, which is the exact opposite to what the Newcastle Jets have put up on their travels so far (W2 D2 L6).

Brisbane Roar Vs Newcastle Jets – Key Facts

  • As the designated home side, Brisbane Roar have not lost an A-League match since last December (W4 D2 since).
  • Galvanised by a new manager, Newcastle Jets have embarked on a six-game unbeaten run (W3 D3) in the A-League.
  • Brisbane Roar have failed to register a league victory over Newcastle Jets in their past seven attempts (D2 L5), while their last win as the home side dates back to 2016, losing each of the last four such meetings.

Both sets of players arrive in high spirits, though, with both winning their most recent two A-League encounters. Meaning this should be a more competitive affair than the standings suggest. Preference, therefore, is for the visitors collecting at least a point. Newcastle Jets are six games unbeaten and boast a formidable record away to Brisbane Roar, who have lost on all four previous meetings as the designated home side – including a 6-1 pummelling last season.
