Nigel Clough would have been delighted to see his team progress into the third round of the FA Cup and happy enough with a home tie against Northampton to take place in January. Between now and then it’s all about improving their league position and attempting to close on the top six. Burton come into this match (which is a game in hand over many of the team above them) knowing a win would take them only three points behind Oxford who currently occupy the last playoff position. It’s been a decent enough run of form for Clough’s team coming into the match. With three defeats in their last 13 league games Burton have been hard to beat but the manager will be looking for a few more victories.

A real strength of Burton’s performances is their defensive capabilities. Having conceded 17 goals in 16 matches the joint third best defensive record in League One. That gives Burton an excellent basis to build upon. If their attacking play can improve then it would be no surprise to see them begin edging closer to those playoff positions.

Southend United Preview – Can Southend halt their five-game losing streak and perhaps pick up their first victory in 10 league games?

Sol Campbell has been in charge of Southend for just under two months and it’s been a real struggle so far. Campbell is the club’s third permanent manager of this calendar year which goes to show exactly who difficult it’s been. Southend are only second bottom due to Bolton’s 12 point deduction at the beginning of the season. They’ve won just one game and taken a meagre five points from their first 18 matches in League One. It’s already looking very doubtful that they will survive as their recent results and performances have been dire. Five straight defeats in the league with 19 goals conceded hardly inspires confidence that they can turn things around.

One of the reasons why Campbell was given the job was because of the job he done at Macclesfield Town and leading them to safety in League Two last season. They were a club five points adrift at the time he too over, however, and he has a much bigger job on his hands here. Now 11 points behind fourth bottom Tranmere, Southend really have to start picking up points to have any chance.

No team in England’s top four divisions have picked up fewer points than Southend and they are like cannon fodder for opposition teams at the moment. It’s an average of nearly three goals a game. That’s simply unsustainable at any level.
