Charlotte – Unmoved at Bank of America Stadium?

Perhaps the strongest claim to being this season’s surprise package in Major League Soccer belongs to Charlotte, who, in their first MLS campaign, are pushing hard for a spot in the post-regular season play-offs. Perched a place and two points below the cut-off line in the Eastern Conference, the team who play all their home games at Bank of America Stadium are a more than respectable W7 D2 L10 for the season.

And speaking of that venue, their record when on hosting duties is up there with the very best. So much that only three teams – LAFC (23), New York City (21) and Real Salt Lake (20) – have accrued more home points (18) thus far. Charlotte are W6 L3 in front of their supporters in league play for the year. They are yet to draw at home, and were six for seven on wins prior to a 1-0 reverse last time out there to Austin FC.

Key Stat: Goals don’t usually grace the Bank of America Stadium. Of the nine MLS matches staged there in 2022, only two saw a return of three or more goals.

Nashville – Unpredictable form poses dilemma for punters?

Ticking along at a gentle pace are Gary Smith and his Nashville side, currently sixth in the Western Conference but with just a three point buffer back to Minnesota United in eighth and missing out on the play-offs. Progress has stalled of late, though, on the back of one win in four (D2 L1). That sole success coming on the road at DC United against a team that thus far has fewer points on the board than all barring Sporting KC.

Predicting which version of Gary Smith’s team will turn up is a tall order in itself. In their past 13 MLS games, none have seen the same result recorded consecutively by a Nashville side whose form across this period reads WDLDWLWDWDLWD. On the plus side, having been held 2-2 at home last time by Portland Timbers, do we dare rule out the possibility of Sunday’s contest in Charlotte ending in stalemate?

Key Stat: There has at least been some consistency away from home of late. Nashville will be seeking their third straight away win in Charlotte, after successive 3-1 victories at Colorado Rapids and DC United in which Hany Mukhtar scored twice in each.

Charlotte Vs Nashville Betting Advice

The teams have only met once before, in a friendly last February in preparation for the imminent return of MLS football. Nashville prevailed 3-1 that day, as hosts no less. In Charlotte though, where our hosts for this match-up are W6 L3 for the season, we could well see that score reversed. A red hot Hany Mukhtar, with seven goals from as many games, and his Nashville colleagues will of course harbour other intentions.

Charlotte Vs Nashville – Key Facts:

  • Sunday (Saturday evening local time) sees a first MLS meeting between Charlotte FC, who are sixth in the Eastern Conference with a record of W7 D2 L10, and Nashville, sat fifth in the Western Conference with a record that reads W7 D6 L5.
  • There were Under 2.5 Goals in six of seven previous Charlotte FC home MLS games. However, six of the last seven Nashville matches, home and away, featured three or more goals.
  • Nashville forward Hank Mukhtar has scored in five of his team’s seven previous league games, netting a pair of goals in recent away wins over Colorado Rapids and DC United.

Nashville are after a third straight road win, so arrive at Bank of America Stadium not lacking for confidence. Charlotte’s home process (1.1xGF, 1.12 xGA) isn’t anything special either, hinting that they’ve been fortunate to pick up as many points as they have. However, Nashville’s underlying numbers (1.3xGF and xGA) aren’t much better. It goes against all logic, but could we see the first drawn MLS encounter in Charlotte?
