With four goals in just 137 minutes of pitch time, Cucho Hernandez has made the switch from the English Premier League to Major League Soccer appear seamless. His arrival galvanizing a Columbus Crew that were finding goals elusive, netting five in seven MLS matches prior to the Venezuelan signing for a club-record fee. They have since eclipsed that total during his three appearances so far, two as an impact sub.

Caleb Porter has seen his team take seven of nine possible points since unleashing Cucho for the first time on July 10. His appearance off the bench precipitating a 3-2 win on the road at Chicago Fire, who led 2-0 at half-time. Thereafter the new signing would be responsible for three of four Crew goals, in a 2-2 draw at DC United and 2-0 home success over FC Cincinnati, to help stretch their unbeaten run to eight (W4 D4).

New England Revolution – Wins drying up for Bruce Arena’s men?

As things stand, the line up for the MLS Cup Playoffs won’t comprise reigning Supporter’s Shield winners (the team that finishes top of the entire league) New England Revolution. A ten game unbeaten sequence (W4 D6) from late April to early July had hinted at a team gradually returning to something like their form of 2021. This after a shaky start to the new season, losing five of their first eight league games.

The wheels are threatening to come off again, though, beaten for the second game running last time out in Philadelphia, after also coming up short against New York City. In their defence they have just played the best two sides in the Eastern Conference, both on the road no less. Yet that is now four successive outings without a win (D2 L2). Another road fixture is far from ideal for a team W2 D3 L5 outside New England.

Revitalised since welcoming Cucho Hernandez into the fold, Columbus Crew will lick their lips at the prospect of facing this New England defence. Bruce Arena’s Revs are coming off a four-game winless stretch in which they’ve conceded at least twice in each of the previous three. Up next?
