Copenhagen – Opening weekend not usually kind to champions?

Just one of the last five league champions of Denmark would go on to record a win in their opening fixture the following season. That was FC Copenhagen, though, and it is they who get the defence of their 2021-22 crown underway on Sunday against last season’s winners from the Danish 1st Division, AC Horsens. Clinching their 14th top division title in May, and first since 2019, with a tally of 68 points from 38 games.

That gave them a combined record across the whole season of W20 D8 L4, marginally superior – to the margin of three points – than FC Midtjylland in second. No team meanwhile collected more points (34) or conceded fewer (9) across 16 home games than Jess Thorup’s men. Although a return of 27 goals scored fell some way short of Midtjylland (32) and was the same as Odense, who finished down in eighth.

Key Stat: Of FC Copenhagen’s 10 Danish Superliga home wins in 2021-22, all but two were achieved whilst recording a clean sheet. This equated to them winning to nil in exactly 50% of Danish Superliga fixtures at Parken Stadium last term.

 

 

Horsens – Being away from home a positive?

Presented with the daunting task of taking on the reigning Superliga champions are last season’s champions of the Danish 1st Division, AC Horsens. With the nickname Den Gule Fare, which, when translated, means The Yellow Danger, perhaps we should all be alert to the potential hazards Jens Berthel Askou’s side present to us. Promoted with an eye-catching away record which saw them win 12 of 16, losing only twice.

To expand on that away record a little more, it is somewhat staggering to think this team boasted vastly superior scoring figures on their travels in 2021-22. They both scored more (30 away compared with 25 at home) and gave up fewer (9 to 20) when not at their CASA Arena Horsens. Whether this translates to the Superliga, having finished in last place in their last campaign at this level, in 2020-21, is another thing.

Key Stat: Horsens would finish last season unbeaten across the final 12 matches in Denmark’s 1st Division. This included a run of six successive away victories, four of which were ‘to nil’.

Those rushing to back the newly-crowned Danish champions to win their opening fixture of the new league season should, at the very least, be aware that only one defending champions across the past five seasons won their opening game.
