Thursday evening brings us the return of the Nations League and features the other upcoming clash in League A/Group 1 between Croatia and Denmark at Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb with Croatia seeking a third Nations League win on the trot, while Denmark will be eager to avenge their earlier defeat at home to Croatia back in mid-June.

Croatia Preview – Can Croatia take over at the top?

Croatia sit in 2nd place in the Group 1 standings and just two points behind the group leaders and upcoming visitors, Denmark, prior to this top of the table clash at their Stadion Maksimir but the hosts know that all three points on Thursday evening would send Zlatko Dalic’s side to the top of the group and take a big step towards the finals.

Despite suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Austria in their opening game of this group stage, Croatia have managed to re-group and they have subsequently put together a solid looking three-match unbeaten run in Group 1 which consists of a point in a 1-1 draw at home with France, followed by back to back wins against Denmark and France, both by 1-0 margins and both being away from home as well.

Indeed, Croatia have been in consistent and impressive form for some time now as the hosts have lost just once in their last 13 matches overall across all competitions, that being the aforementioned loss to Austria, but having also picked up eight wins as well in the process, Thursday’s hosts look in good shape to gain a favourable result here.

Croatia have also been a tough side to beat on home soil as well, with the hosts losing just two of their previous 13 matches on home soil overall but there’s still work to do at home in the Nations League as Croatia have lost three of their last four home games in this competition.

Nevertheless, Croatia hold a decent record against Denmark in recent times as the hosts have won each of the last three meetings on the trot and they look a decent prospect on Thursday night as well.

Denmark Preview – Can Danes be great in Zagreb?

Denmark sit top of Group 1 with a nine-point haul thanks to winning three out of their opening four group games, with victories gained over France in a 2-1 win in Paris along with home and away wins against Austria, although their one loss so far was against Thursday’s upcoming hosts, Croatia.

The Danes have produced some impressive results though over the last year or so as the visitors have won 13 of their last 17 matches in all competitions and with the likes of creative midfielder, Christian Eriksen, within their personnel, the visitors are still a serious threat and have deserved to lead the group thus far.

Recent results away from home though haven’t been totally convincing as Denmark have lost three of their last seven outings on the road with defeats incurred at England, Scotland and Netherlands and although they have also picked up wins away at Faroe Islands, Moldova, France and Austria, their head to head record against Croatia hasn’t been great of late.

In addition, Denmark have kept just three clean sheets in their last 11 away games overall and Croatia’s corresponding creative midfielder, Luka Modric, is expected to find any holes in the Danish defence on Thursday night.

Key Facts – Croatia v Denmark Tip

  • Croatia have lost just 2 of their previous 13 matches on home soil overall
  • Denmark have lost 3 of their last 7 outings on the road overall
  • Croatia have won each of the last 3 meetings against Denmark

Croatia got their Nations League campaign off to a bad start as they suffered a heavy loss to Austria but the hosts have since staged a decent recovery and with home advantage, the hosts will fancy their chances of overhauling visitors, Denmark, into top spot in Group 1 whilst also taking a big step towards a possible place in the finals of the competition.

Denmark will be keen to avenge their previous defeat to Croatia here, but recent history against their hosts seems to be against them and they may find this a tough evening at the office at the Stadion Maksimir, and may just be happy to settle for a draw at best.
