Dundee Preview – will the Dark Blues cause a cup upset?

Dundee have not find it easy since dropping out of the Premiership. They trail arch-rivals Dundee United by a long way in the Championship and automatic promotion back to the top flight this season already looks beyond them. However, there is still a chance that James McPake’s side will make the play-offs and that will be their priority.
McPake has already added to his squad in the transfer window and St Johnstone loanee Ross Callachan goes straight into the squad to face Motherwell. He will strengthen the midfield but Dundee were not in the best of form in the run-up to the winter break. Though fighting back to earn a draw at Dundee United, they lost their last home match against Inverness Caley Thistle.
Kane Hemmings and Danny Johnson share goalscoring responsibilities for the Dark Blues, supported by Paul McGowan. The experience is provided by Graham Dorrans and it would be no surprise if, backed by the Dens Park faithful, if Dundee were competitive against their higher-ranked opponents – but will they find their touch in front of goal

Motherwell Preview – ‘Well resilience may thwart Championship rivals

Goals are not figured prominently in any of Motherwell’s last six matches.
Between one and three have been scored but Stephen Robinson’s side have won four of those six games so are obviously doing something right.
Ahead of the resumption of the Premiership, they lie in third place in the table behind only Celtic and Rangers.
They have won their last three away matches in the league, conceding only one goal, but took their eye off the ball in their final game before the winter break and lost against struggling Hamilton Academical.
Liam Grimshaw has become a key defender for Motherwell and he has just signed a contract extension. Peter Hartley continues to roll back the years at the heart of the defence while Ross Maciver must be pressing for a start having come off the bench in his team’s last two fixtures. Bournemouth striker Mikael Ndjoli has joined the club on loan and could make his debut at Dens Park with Jamie Scott the most likely to miss out.

Motherwell have won on five of their last six visits to Dundee and drew the other. In those six matches, Dundee managed just two goals compared to eight scored by ‘Well.

Trends – Dundee vs Motherwell Betting Tip

  • Dundee have only scored more than one goal in one of their last six matches
  • Motherwell have won four of their last six matches in the Premiership
  • Motherwell have won on five of their last six visits to Dens Park

Dundee are very much a work in progress after the trauma of last season. If Motherwell can prevent Graham Dorrans from getting a grip of the midfield, their defence should be in for a relatively comfortable evening and their forwards to will have  a springboard to score a goal or two.
