England Preview – Can England reach their first ever World Cup final?

There has been a lot of pessimism surrounding England’s performances at this World Cup and doubts they could achieve their objective of winning the competition. Phil Neville’s team went some way to dispelling some of those doubts when thrashing Norway in their quarter-final game. The Norwegians were seen as being a difficult opponent but England turned in their best performance of the tournament thus far to progress. It was their second successive 3-0 win in the knockout phase and fourth consecutive clean sheet. Despite those doubts early in the competition there has been no doubt that this is a group of players who are united. The Lionesses will again required improvement in order to reach Sunday’s final but it’s not beyond them.

This is the same stage England reached in 2015 when the World Cup was held in the Canada. They were agonisingly beaten by Japan on that occasion and had to settle for finishing third. That experience and disappointment will stand them in good stead for Tuesday’s game.

USA – Are world champions set to make it to a fifth final?

It’s a Women’s World Cup so that means the USA have made it to the semi-final stage. In all seven previous tournaments the States have made it this far which is an indication of their tremendous consistency. They were the first ever winners back in 1991 and have won it twice since, including four years ago. Coming into this competition as reigning champions has not fazed them one bit, either. If anything, the pressure and expectation is something this group of players thrive on. A 13-0 win over a hapless Thailand team opened their defence and they have barely looked back since. Their most difficult game so far came in the last-16 when scraping past Spain in somewhat controversial circumstances. That led to a quarter-final clash with hosts France in what has been arguably the game of the World Cup thus far.

Key to both of those wins has been their captain Megan Rapinoe. This is the striker’s third World Cup and she is certainly making her mark once again. Rapinoe has scored her team’s last four goals meaning she is the only US player to score in the knockout phase as yet.

Key-Facts – England v USA

  • England and USA have been the two standout teams and this looks like being a Titanic tussle to reach Sunday’s final
  • The semi-final stage is the furthest England have made it whilst the USA have won the World Cup three times
  • There is little between these teams and they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in March in the SheBelieves Cup

England v USA Betting Advice

These two teams were picked out as being the most likely winners of the World Cup some time ago. It would have been a fitting final itself but there’s no doubt whoever wins this will be big favourites going into Sunday’s showpiece game. It could be said England have a slight advantage having played a day before the States and may be a bit more rested. Another consideration is how much experience this USA team have in their ranks. No other team has played at this stage as often and they know what it takes to reach the final.

England are the emerging force in women’s football and that was illustrated earlier this year when they took the prestigious SheBelieves Cup. These teams played out a 2-2 draw in that competition and that will give England belief they can compete and beat USA tomorrow. France and Spain have both troubled the world champions in the knockout phase and will have to defend better against this England team. Equally, England have had a spell in each of their games where they have fallen out it but not been punished.

It’s set up to be a World Cup classic. They are the two form teams in the world and there is little to choose between them. It’s likely to be a game that is settled by small margins and I see the draw after 90 minutes as being the best bet here.
