England Preview – Can England end on positive note?
Although England made a bright start to their Nations League campaign by winning two of their first three matches in Group 2 after beating Iceland 1-0 away and a 2-1 home win over leaders, Belgium, Gareth Southgate’s side have subsequently slipped to two defeats on the trot.
Back-to-back defeats against Denmark 1-0 at home followed by their recent abject display away at Belgium ending in a 2-0 loss, England have now been ruled out of a place in the semi-finals as they occupy 3rd place and five points behind Belgium.
A 3-0 home win over Republic of Ireland last time out in an international friendly should restore spirits though and even with Southgate’s meddling and fiddling, the hosts should record a straightforward win against Iceland.

Having lost all five of their matches to date in Group 2 which has seen the visitors ship a total of 13 goals so far in this campaign, it’s unsurprising that Iceland find themselves rock-bottom of this group as they prepare for this final group match away in London against England.
Iceland’s form overall has taken a sharp nosedive in recent times as the visitors have suffered six defeats out of their last seven matches overall, losing their last four on the trot with defeats incurred against Denmark (home and away), Belgium and Hungary – the latter being a loss in the Final Play-Off for a place in next season’s European Championship.
In addition, Iceland’s results away from home have been poor as they’ve collected just two wins out of their last 16 matches which were at minnows Andorra and Moldova, so they’re expected to struggle against England in this clash.
