Preview: FC Dallas‘ Toyota Stadium, in Frisco, Texas, does not hold many fond memories for New York City FC. The latter would avoid losing on two of three prior visits but are still winless in this neck of the woods. Is that set to change in the early hours of Thursday?

FC Dallas – El Toro enduring the longest of lulls?

Not many teams are capable of reigning in this FC Dallas team, who are still prominently positioned in fourth spot in the Western Conference standings despite enduring what can only be described as a rut. Last Sunday’s 2-2 scoreline away to the Houston Dynamo was another game they should have won but didn’t, and another game in which they were forced to settle for a point from a game they held a lead in.

Dallas have now been ahead in three of the past four MLS matches: on the road at Austin FC and Houston Dynamo, and when hosting Inter Miami. They drew each of those games, giving up a 101st minute equaliser last time out in Houston. Their inability to retain leads is costing them not only ground at the top of the West but vital momentum, with that now one win in eight league games (D3 L4) going back to mid-May.

Key Stat: Nico Estevez has seen his side score in 11 of 12 recent league games. The exception being last month’s 2-0 home loss to Vancouver Whitecaps, which still stands as the only instance of FC Dallas not scoring across nine outings at Toyota Stadium in MLS this season.

New York City – Pigeons found their wings again?

That winning feeling is back. Finally. For much of this season, New York City have been the clear best side from the Eastern Conference, and for much of the season the table reflected this. That is no longer the case, though, largely on account of former head coach Ronny Deila’s sudden and shock switch to Belgium side Standard Liege, sparking a four-game slump (D3 L1) under his former assistance, Nick Cushing.

A 4-2 victory over last season’s Supporters Shield winners, New England Revs, should go a long way to restoring confidence that had begun to ebb away. In fairness, NYCFC were given a huge helping hand from the officials, gifted three penalty kicks and treated to an entire second half playing against ten men. The end result was a nervier win that many anticipated, despite generating a staggering 5.36 xG as per Infogol.

Key Stat: New York City striker Taty Castellanos leads the way in the MLS Golden Boot race, notching his 11 and 12 of the campaign last time out. The Argentine has scored in each of his last three MLS matches, tallying five goals.

FC Dallas Vs New York City Betting Advice

Last time out against the 10-men of New England Revolution, New York City looked something close to their former selves, even if they did receive more than their fair share of the rub of the green at Yankee Stadium. They sure could do with a similar amount of good fortune for their visit of Toyota Stadium. In three prior trips to this venue, the Pigeons are yet to win (D2 L1), drawing 1-1 the last twice (in 2017 & 2019).

FC Dallas Vs New York City – Key Facts:

  • Four of the past five MLS head-to-heads between FC Dallas and New York City ended in a draw. These includes the previous two encounters inside Toyota Stadium, both of which produced 1-1 scorelines.
  • Whereas New York City recently halted their four-game winless spell (D3 L1) with victory at home to New England Revolution, FC Dallas are still waiting for their first MLS wins since the start of June (D3 L2 thereafter).
  • FC Dallas would find themselves ahead at half-time but level at full-time in each of their last two MLS matches. Meanwhile, NYCFC came from 3-0 down inside the opening 30 minutes to earn a 4-4 draw at FC Cincinnati in their latest away outing.

However, are these perfect conditions for NYCFC to strike away to an FC Dallas coming off a three-game winless stretch as hosts? On top of that, the latter are still very much stuck in a slump having five without a win (D3 L2), picking up maximum points once in eight previous attempts. Despite all that though, NYCFC would also drop points on their most recent couple of outings (2-1 loss in Philly, 4-4 draw in Cincinnati).
