FC Zurich Preview – Can Zurich put three defeats behind them and revive their hopes of a top four finish?
There would have been optimism that Zurich could force themselves into one of the Europa League spots but a dismal recent run has put an end to any of those hopes. They sit 17 points behind Basel in third now mainly because of four defeats in their last six games including their last three. One of those being a thumping 4-0 loss away to Basel. They’ve also lost heavily at home to likely champions Young Boys in that time.
Fourth spot may yet result in Europa League qualification should Basel or Young Boys win the Swiss Cup and that is something still within the grasp of Zurich.
Currently four points behind Servette, Zurich have a game in hand over both them and Luzern in the race for fourth. They still have the latter of these teams to play as well so it’s still in their hands. But they will have to bounce back from some disappointing losses and find their scoring boots again have drawn blanks in three straight matches.
Since December onwards it’s been a really poor spell for Ludovic Magnin’s team and uncertain if they can find the sort of form they need in order to climb the table.

It’s looking increasingly that Young Boys are going to win their third straight Swiss title and that is going to sting all concerned at St Gallen. With five games to go they one point ahead of the current leaders and in with a real chance of winning just their third ever title and their first since 2000. They have been a surprise contender from the beginning and done ever so well to to maintain their challenge. But being five points behind with three games to go, it’s likely they are going to fall just short.
The most optimistic of supporters will point to the fact that they finish the season off against Young Boys but the nature of their recent results are a concern.

Losing away to lowly Thun can happen due to the upturn in that club’s form but to be thumped 5-0 at home to Basel directly after is the most alarming of those losses. It was a capitulation and one that you are unsure they can recover from with the games coming so soon after the other.
