Preview: A second game inside three days sees Montenegro keen to double down on their early lead atop League B Group 3. The lowest ranking member of this group heads to Helsinki next, where a Finland side still smarting from conceding the latest of equalising goals in their opening fixture, awaits.

Finland – Eagle-Owls verging on sixth successive winless outing?

In a modest but competitive section that also comprises Bosnia, Montenegro and Romania, the Finns, as the only member of this quarter to have featured at the last major tournament, EURO 2020, would have fancied their own chances of securing promotion to the highest tier within UEFA Nations League. That was before Saturday’s bitterly frustrating 1-1 home draw with Bosnia, though.

Teemu Pukki’s 35th international goal, another trademark penalty, appeared to have earned Markku Kanerva’s men three well-earned points, after dominating for large periods in Helsinki. Instead they were sucker-punched in the 93rd minute, denying them what would have been a first win since last November (D2 L2) and leaving them with an uninspiring record of one win in seven competitive home games (D2 L4).

Key Stat: Five of Finland’s eight previous goals were scored by their all-time leading goalscorer, Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki. Three of these strikes were the opening goal of the game.

Montenegro – Brave Falcons flying high in League B?

After securing promotion from League C at the second attempt last time around, some might have assumed Montenegro would be content with consolidating their place in the competition’s second tier. Those early assertions certainly feel modest now. A 2-0 win at home to Romania, as a 2/1 underdog despite boasting the advantage of playing in front of fans, providing the perfect start to life in League B Group 3.

Victory over Finland would be another first, with this their first ever meeting. However, a return of one win across their last six fixtures (D2 L3) outside of Podgorica, failing to score in four, suggests this is highly unlikely. Especially as that rare success was something of a formality in Gibraltar. Although that is now back-to-back victories for the world’s 70th ranked nation, having defeated Greece 1-0, also at home, in March.

Key Stat: With wins in each of their past two matches – 2-0 vs Romania, 1-0 vs Greece (both on home soil) – Montenegro would win twice as many times as they had done in their 11 previous fixtures (W1 D4 L6).

Finland Vs Montenegro Betting Advice

The games continue to come thick and fast as UEFA Nations League picks up momentum. Finland saw theirs ground to a shuddering halt, though, as they were denied a winning start in League B Group 3 by a 93rd minute leveller from Bosnia. Elsewhere, there were no such issues for Montenegro, who, at tantalising odds of 2/1 to win at home, duly obliged, turning Romania over 2-0 in Podgorica.

Finland Vs Montenegro – Key Facts:

  • Tuesday’s encounter will mark the first ever between the countries. There are 23 places in the latest FIFA Rankings separating them ahead of kick-off in Helsinki: Finland #57, Montenegro #70.
  • Finland haven’t scored more than once in any of their past ten matches, resulting in just four of their last 15 contests seeing both teams score.
  • Confidence should be high among the visiting camp after winning their previous two matches. Their last six away matches returned a solitary win against lowly Gibraltar, with all but one of these contests seeing one team or neither score.

All the momentum, then, appears to be with the visitors, who will be seeking a third straight victory to go with those over Romania and Greece. As for Finland, that is now no win in five. Moreover, Marrku Karnerva’s side would win only once – against a Kazakhstan ranked 125 – in their last seven competitive matches here in Helsinki, while that is now ten games in a row scoring no more than a single goal (4 in total).
