Finland – Finns heavily reliant on Pukki firing?

Five points from four qualifiers means Finland are consigned to a tussle for second spot in Group D. The Nordic country trail France by seven points but are in with every chance of claiming a runners-up berth. This would see them compete in the play-offs. Currently, however, they are edged into third on goal difference by Ukraine who they meet for the fourth time in five years on Saturday. They are yet to win any of these meetings (D1 L2).

The Finns would earn a share of the points when these sides squared off in Kiev in March, though. Teemu Pukki netted a late penalty in that game and accounts for three of their four goals so far. As such, it comes as little surprise to hear there have been a paucity of goals recently. Head coach Markku Kanerva overseeing an uninspiring run that has seen them net twice across the last eight fixtures (W2 D1 L5).

Key Stat: Since the start of 2020, Finland have only managed to win two of their eleven international matches (D3 L6), scoring at a rate of 0.63 per game during this sequence.

Ukraine – Shevchenko’s men cannot shake drawing habit?

As the second highest ranked nation in Group D, it comes as no surprise to see Ukraine nestled in second behind runaway leaders France. More surprising, however, is the sight of their record so far. As while they are yet to lose after six qualifying games, even managing to stifle the World Cup holders home and away, Andriy Shevchenko’s team are also yet to win after remarkably playing out five consecutive draws.

Four of those qualifying games ended 1-1. The anomaly, meanwhile, which was the 2-2 draw away in Kazakhstan, was 1-1 up until the 92 minute, before both teams traded late blows. What makes it all the more galling for Shevchenko, however, was that his team led in four of those contests. All in all it means his team are winless, when excluding games that went into extra-time, in their past six matches (D4 L2).

Key Stat: Since the beginning of 2020, Ukraine have drawn 57 per cent of the time (8/14) when excluding games that went to extra-time, with all but one of their eight draws in this timeframe coming via a 1-1 scoreline.

Finland Vs Ukraine Betting Advice

Ukraine are still to incur a single defeat, drawing all five qualifiers thus far, whereas Finland have been solid enough to avoid losing all but one of their four – the exception being the rather routine 2-0 scoreline in Paris against reigning world champions France. On the face of it then, a closely fought encounter seems likely to ensue, with a repeat of their 1-1 draw in Kiev back in March not ruled out.

Finland Vs Ukraine – Key Facts:

  • Ahead of their meeting this weekend, there is nothing to separate Finland (W1 D2 L1) and Ukraine (D5) in Group D. They contested a 1-1 draw back in March.
  • Despite leading in all but one qualifying contest so far, Ukraine remain winless but have seen 100% of their matches during this campaign feature both teams scoring.
  • That bet appears to be in serious jeopardy here though. For Finland boast a paltry two goals across their past eight fixtures, with all these games going Under 2.5 Goals.

Both teams scored in all of Ukraine’s qualifying matches so far. This bet lacks appeals, though, owing to the lack of goals emanating from our hosts. Finland, although they have found the net in three of their four qualifying outings, are without a goal in six of their last eight matches having managed one in the past five. Furthermore, they are currently on a run of eight straight fixtures seeing Under 2.5 Goals land.
