Fleetwood Town made a positive start to their new season on the weekend when they won their first match of the League One season with a solid 2-0 home win over Rotherham United, as they put last season’s play-off defeat behind them.
Fleetwood finished in an impressive fourth place at the end of the regular season which earned them a play-off spot, but made an exit due to a 1-0 loss to Bradford City in the semi-finals. However, a win on the weekend will give them confidence for tonight’s League Cup first round tie with League Two outfit, Carlisle United.
Fleetwood manager Uwe Rosler has a young and talented squad at his disposal and promising striker McAleny is expected to start again up front having notched a brace against Rotherham in the season opener.
Visitors Carlisle United were also involved in the play-offs at the end of the season in League Two after they finished in sixth place, but The Cumbrians will be kicking themselves as they were in the frame for an automatic promotion berth at Christmas.
Carlisle lost to Exeter City in a high-scoring two-legged affair in the play-off semi-finals, losing out 6-5 on aggregate, and this blow, along with losing their opening match in the new League Two season 2-1 at home to Swindon Town, may just be a dent in their early season confidence.
Whilst it’s difficult to predict these sort of games, especially in the early rounds of the League Cup, I’m going to back the hosts, Fleetwood here as they’ve got their season off to a good start, and hold home advantage.
