My next pick in the National League features perhaps the biggest fixture of this weekend with seventh placed Fylde taking on second placed Sutton United at Mill Farm, with both teams at either end of the play-off pack needing the points.
Looking at Fylde first, and the hosts are in pretty good shape having lost just once in their last six, which was a 2-0 defeat away at Dagenham & Redbridge, but recent wins over Dover Athletic, a 7-1 thumping of Aldershot Town, together with back-to-back wins over Halifax Town and Barrow have helped transform the unfancied ‘minnows’ into play-off contenders.
Fylde are the league’s top goal scorers, and it’s easy to see why as they’ve hit Tranmere Rovers 5-2, Macclesfield Town 6-0 and Aldershot 7-1 already this season. They also possess a strong home record of 10-8-3 48/25 which includes just one defeat from their last 15 matches on home turf. Leading goalscorer Rowe (23 goals) also tops the National league goalscoring charts.
Onto Sutton United, and they’ll be pressing for all three points when they make the long trek up north to face Lancashire outfit Fylde, as they trail league leaders, Macclesfield by a margin of nine points with time running out fast.
It’s true that Sutton do have a game in hand over The Silkmen, but they need all three points in that game to make it count, and today’s trip to Fylde won’t be an easy task at hand either. A couple of recent defeats to Maidstone United (away) and last weekend’s heavy 3-0 loss at home to Bromley have virtually ruled them out of automatic promotion now.
It therefore looks likely that Sutton will have to make do with a play-off spot, despite possessing a decent away record of 10-4-5 27/19, but an encouraging fact for Sutton is that they’ve suffered just one defeat to top seven opposition away from home all season to date.
