The new Turkish Super Lig season commenced this weekend, and my first pick of the campaign is Galatasaray taking on Kayserispor at their Türk Telekom Stadyumu in Istanbul as the hosts look to improve upon a disappointing fourth place finish at the end of last season.
It was a similarly disappointing finish for Fenerbahce, whom Galatasaray finished level on points with, but both former powerhouses of the Turkish domestic scene will have to make do with Europa League football this season.
Tonight’s hosts lost six matches on home turf last season, and they’ll be looking for an improvement of results this term as they chase at least a top two spot. Nevertheless, they finished last term in strong fashion as they collected four wins on the trot overall against Gaziantepspor, Osmanlispor, Alanyaspor and Konyaspor. They’ve also recruited former Marseille striker, Gomis, who smashed 20 goals in Ligue 1 last season.
Visitors Kayserispor narrowly avoided relegation last season in the Turkish top flight as they finished just one league position above the bottom three, and two points above Rizespor, who joined Gaziantepspor and Adanaspor into the 1.Lig for this season.
A very useful and extremely timely five-match unbeaten sequence in the season run-in assisted Kayserispor to safety, a run which included wins over Alanyaspor, Trabzonspor and Konyaspor, as well as an earlier 2-1 win away at tonight’s opponents, Galatasaray, back in February.
However, Kayserispor’s form away from home was sporadic which is reflected in their final stats of 4-5-8 24/35, with only three teams conceding more than them away from home in the division.
If new signing Gomis can strike early for Galatasaray, then the home side should secure the points here…
