Gambia – Scorions taking debutant AFCON by storm?

The Scorpions memorable Africa Cup of Nations run has yet to reach its conclusion after Musa Barrow’s lone strike settled their last sixteen meeting with Guinea. The tournament debutants and lowest-ranking nation at these finals are now into the quarter-finals where they face host nation Cameroon in another lopsided contest on paper. Gambia are ranked 150 in the world, 100 places below their next opponents.

Although the odds were stacked against them from the immediate outset, Tom Saintfiet’s players have remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, winning three of four matches so far and conceding only in their 1-1 draw with Mali. They have now lost just one of their last seven meetings with African opposition and are unbeaten in six such matches (W5 D1), since a 1-0 loss to Congo DR in March of last year.

Key Stat: Gambia’s three victories in this tournament have all been via the same scoreline, 1-0. They are among a select few sides to have netted in all four fixtures so far, with three of their four strikes coming in the second-half.

Cameroon – Host nation now worthy tournament favourites?

After an entertaining contest in the Cameroon capital Yaounde, the host nation did safely progress onto the quarter-finals – but it wasn’t nearly as convincing as some were expecting. Facing a Comoros side who were forced to name a left back by trade as their goalkeeper, who were further hindered when reduced to ten men early on, the Indomitable Lions were made to sweat for their 2-1 victory.

In fairness, it did take a sensational free-kick to halve the arrears last time. But that is now all four games conceding at least once at this tournament. Fortunately this hasn’t negatively impacted them, being the tournament’s nine goal top-scorers. Al Nassr forward Vicent Aboubakar accounts for six of that tally. His goals helping Toni Conceicao’s men stretch their unbeaten run to eight matches (W7 D1).

Key Stat: Cameroon have scored a first-half goal in all four Africa Cup of Nations matches but were only ahead at both half-time and full-time on two occasions.

Gambia Vs Cameroon Betting Advice

Whereas the scoreline was a lot closer than many anticipated, there was never any doubt Cameroon would prevail in their last 16 clash with Comoros. Yet the fact they did rather labour through proceedings, under favourable circumstances, will offer hope to the tournament’s lowest-ranked side that they can continue their memorable debut tournament. And Gambia are big odds to win inside 90 minutes.

Gambia Vs Cameroon – Key Facts:

  • Both these teams are still to lose a game at this tournament, boasting identical records (W3 D1) ahead of their last eight meeting.
  • Cameroon prevailed the only two times the countries have met, on both occasions without conceding (2-0 in September 2016 and 0-1 in September 2015).
  • Gambia’s four Africa Cup of Nations matches so far have seen a paltry five goals with three going Under 1.5. However, there has been a total of 13 scored across Cameroon’s four encounters with three going Over 2.5.

Should both side’s respective forms hold up, we should see Cameroon progress by winning in normal time without keeping a clean sheet. The Indomitable Lions have conceded in all four matches so far. They face a Gambia which has scored in all four games en route to this stage. I’m inclined to think otherwise, though. Under 1.5 Goals has landed in three of four Gambia games so far, the other ending in a 1-1 draw.
