Germany – Modest beginnings to Flick era?

Just the small gap of 173 places in the latest FIFA rankings separated Germany (W3 L1) from their hosts, Liechtenstein, in last Thursday’s 2-0 victory in St Gallen. And while the performance was unsurprisingly dominant from the four-time World Cup winners, the scoreline undoubtedly wasn’t as goals from Timo Werner and Leroy Sane handed Hansi Flick his first taste of success as head coach of the national team.

Victory was all important last time, and it was will be a case of more of the same demanded from Flick ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash with Armenia, who actually lead the way in Group J with the Germans a point back in second. All three victories thus far have followed a similar pattern, though. All were to nil. Succumbing to a shock 2-1 loss at home to North Macedonia the only occasion they did concede so far.

Key Stat: The clean sheet against Liechtenstein last time out brought a seven-match sequence without one to an end, having conceded twice in three successive games beforehand.

Armenia – Group leaders about to surrender top spot?

Group J frontrunners Armenia (W3 D1) saw their perfect start to World Cup qualifying ended in midweek, forced to settle for a 0-0 draw in North Macedonia. By all accounts it was a poor affair in Skopje, devoid of any real attacking quality. The visitors, who would have preserved their three point advantage atop the group with a win, were instead content on sitting back, ceding possession and hitting on the break.

That is now three matches on the bounce without winning, having reeled off five in a row beforehand. Nevertheless, we can expect a similar approach in Germany (a back’s to the wall effort; playing almost exclusively on the counter-attack). Three of their four qualifiers seen them keep their clean sheet in tact, with Romania, in a 3-2 loss in Armenia, the only side thus far in the group to breach Joaquin Caparros’ side.

Key Stat: Having begun 2021 winning three games in a row, scoring six in the process, Armenia have subsequently failed to win in three (D2 L1), scoring twice.

Germany Vs Armenia Betting Advice

After what could only be described as an underwhelming start to Hansi Flick’s reign, Germany will look to build on Thursday’s modest 2-0 win away to Liechtenstein in this must win encounter with Armenia. The latter will almost certainly set themselves up to frustrate their illustrious hosts, knowing a draw would preserve their status as Group J leaders while a shock victory would enlarge their buffer.

Germany Vs Armenia – Key Facts:

  • One point separates the teams ahead of their first meeting for more than seven years, with Germany boasting a 100% record in previous match ups (W3, GF15 GA2).
  • However, it is Armenia (W3 D1) currently atop the group. The visitors are unbeaten after four qualifying matches, recording a clean sheet in all but one game (3-2 vs Romania).
  • Germany (W3 L1) can also claim to have a mean rearguard. Thursday’s easy 2-0 win in Liechtenstein was their third clean sheet in four qualifying outings so far.

While the Germans are capable of going through the gears and plundering a few goals, Thursday’s performance suggests this could be hard work. In their last nine games, Germany have scored 20. However, seven came in one outing, a 7-1 pasting of Latvia, scoring no more than twice in five of those outings. Meanwhile, Armenia have only shipped two goals across four 2022 World Cup qualifiers thus far.
