Preview: Thursday night’s hard-fought 0-0 draw at home to USA means Mexico are still in a commanding position to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Three points in San Pedro Sula away to Honduras, the only team without a qualifying victory thus far, could spark celebrations from the visiting contingent inside Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.

Honduras – Los Catrachos left playing for pride?

Los Catrachos won’t play any part at the 2022 World Cup finals, missing out on a second consecutive tournament after successive appearances at the 2010 and 2014 editions, after a largely forgettable campaign until this stage. Through twelve games in CONCACAF’s Octagonal qualifying phase, the Central American nation sit last of eight teams on four points (D4 L8). They are the only side without a win.

Not since 1990 has the country gone the entirety of this stage without winning a single match, so there is certainly pride at stake in these final two outings. Pride seemed to play a key role in Thursday’s 1-1 draw in Panama. Halting a run of eight consecutive losses courtesy of midfielder Kevin Lopez’s first international goal. Emboldened perhaps, they’ll now look to end a six-game winless sequence as hosts (D1 L5).

Key Stat: Honduras conceded multiple goals in all but one of six home qualifiers, with the exception being the only contest they didn’t lose on home soil – the 0-0 draw at this same venue with Costa Rica in October last year.

Mexico – El Tri limping towards Qatar 2022?

With the benefit of hindsight, perhaps it was all too obvious Thursday’s eagerly-anticipated clash in Mexico City with the United States would end in stalemate. The pair are locked on points in second and third after all, and with a reasonably comfortable cushion back to the chasing pack, a point was always likely to appease both camps. Yet it was Mexico who were most thankful, after a subdued performance.

Had USA brought their shooting boots, El Tri would have been preparing for a trip to Honduras reeling from a fourth consecutive defeat to their fiercest of rivals. Not that the point has improved the complexion that is their recent form: that now two wins in eight (D3 L3) having found the net once across the last three. If Gerardo Martino is to achieve his objective of qualification, it may be because his team crawled over the line.

Key Stat: Mexico are barely averaging a goal a game away from home in these qualifiers (1.16 per away game), scoring one goal or fewer on four occasions and never more than two.

Honduras Vs Mexico Betting Advice

Their ticket to Qatar will be punched as early as Sunday (local time) with a win in San Pedro Sula. But are Mexico to be trusted? After another below par display last time out against the Americans – a clash which should have brought the best out of them, as it often has in the past – it is now two wins in eight and one goal scored in three. So on current form, any victory in Honduras is likely to be modest in margin.

Honduras Vs Mexico – Key Facts:

  • Their wait for a first win in CONCACAF’s Octagonal stage goes on for Honduras who held on for a 1-1 draw away to Panama in their latest encounter.
  • Honduras are currently winless across their previous 15 international matches (D4 L11), since a 3-2 victory over Panama in the ground stage of last summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
  • Mexico’s form isn’t much better, though, with Thursday’s 1-1 draw at home to USA leaving them with two wins in eight (D3 L3) – though they did record their third successive defensive shutout.

These final two qualifiers are all that remains for Honduras to avoid the ignominy of a winless campaign. Los Catrachos have endured a torrid time so far but did salvage some pride with a recent draw in Panama, halting not only a long losing run but notching their first goal for four matches. At home, though, they’ve already been beaten to nil by Canada, El Salvador and Jamaica. Meanwhile Mexico, with clean sheets in each of their past three qualifiers, secured two of their three away victories thus far without conceding.
