Iceland Preview – Can Iceland avoid another whitewash?

Iceland once again find themselves in Group 2 of League A in this season’s Nations League and they’ll be desperate to avoid a repeat of their last campaign in this competition which saw the hosts lose all four of their group matches, scoring just one goal in the process, which left them without a point and bottom of the group.

However, Iceland staged a recovery in their subsequent Euro qualifying campaign which resulted in them achieving a 3rd place finish in Group H behind France and Turkey, and this means that the Icelanders now meet Romania in a semi-final play-off in October.

The less said about their previous Nations League campaign the better, but Iceland dusted themselves off and having lost just three of their last 15 matches overall in all competitions and winning six of their last seven matches at home overall, Iceland stand a chance of at least keeping the score respectable against England.

England Preview – Can England make finals again?

After a successful group campaign in the first ever Nations League which saw England record wins against Spain and gaining their revenge over Croatia, the Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the competition but were unceremoniously dumped out of final reckoning by Portugal thanks to a heavy 3-1 loss in extra-time.

England beat Switzerland on penalties in the irrelevant 3rd place play-off, but it was in the subsequent European qualifiers where England really excelled, albeit in a rather weak group which saw England finish top of Group A by a six-point margin over runners-up, Czech Republic.

Gareth Southgate’s side won seven of their eight group matches and to be fair, can only beat what’s in front of them but although they recorded wins at Montenegro, Bulgaria and Kosovo n convincing fashion, the 2-1 loss at Czech Republic perhaps show that England aren’t quite as good as many would have you believe.
