No win in first four places Incheon under greater pressure?

For a second successive season Incheon United (11th – W0 D2 L2), who would end Matchday 4 a point above bottom side Gwangju in the K League standings after slumping to a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to Pohang Steelers last Sunday, are once again among the slowest to get going. Last season seen them register one win right through to Gameweek 13. They are already up to four without any in 2020.

Last week was a schooling, though, as Lim Wan-Sup’s team shipped more goals in that one encounter than in their first three fixtures combined, when limiting the likes of Daegu (0-0, H), Seongnam (0-0, A) and Suwon Samsung Bluewings (1-0, A) to one effort between them. Alarmingly it could conceivably have been more, with Pohang reaching double figures for attempts on target during a comfortable victory.

The only positive to be had last time out was Ho-Nam Kim netting his team’s first of the season, even if it were merely a consolation. These scoring issues are nothing new, either: in 2019 only Seongnam netted fewer than their 33 in 38 games, doing so at a meager rate of 0.79 per game at their Incheon Football Stadium, where three points were also something of a rarity (W2 D8 L9).

Gangwon in good shape to build on another promising start?

In another strong early showing, last Sunday Gangwon (5th- W2 D1 L1) mirrored their points total at this same stage of last season by making it seven points across the opening four rounds with a hard-fought 1-0 success at home to the defending champions, and current leaders, Jeonbuk Motors. Victory, over the ten men of Jeonbuk, moving Kim Byung-soo’s side to within two points of the K League summit.

No doubt buoyed by that latest display. Gangwon will therefore seek to build upon a fine start to the campaign – with results against FC Seoul (3-1, H) and Seongnam (1-1, H) sandwiching a 2-0 loss to Sangju Sangmu (2-0, A) – when they take on favourable opponents this Friday. Up next a trip to Incheon United, who remain winless and, more pertinently, have won only one of the pair’s previous ten K League meetings (W1 D3 L6 vs Gangwon).

Meanwhile, Gangwon would come out on top in two of three clashes with Incheon in 2019, running out marginal 2-1 victors as the away side in one of five away triumphs that year (W5 D5 L5). The rate at which they scored also dropped significantly away from home, from 1.79 down to 1.16, and so caution is perhaps advised despite there being plenty to suggest another strong showing could be forthcoming.

Incheon United Vs Gangwon Betting Advice

Without a win so far, Incheon are undoubtedly under greater onus to collect one here, especially with them being the home side. Yet their contribution after four games reads one point and one goal, both of which are clearly concerning. Meanwhile, Gangwon are encountering no problems either scoring or picking up points, and should be brimming with confidence after last week’s defeat of champions Jeonbuk.

Incheon Vs Gangwon – Key Facts

  • After four rounds in this season’s K League 1, Incheon are still to register a win (D1 L3) whereas Gangwon are looking to add to their two early victories (W2 D1 L1).
  • Goals have been in short supply so far, with no more than two goals scored in three of their opening four matches for both these teams.
  • However, this fixture is renowned for producing them with six of the last seven league meetings between the pair delivering Over 2.5 Goals.

Under 2.5 Goals (4/6 Boylesports) has proved popular with both teams this season, landing 75% of the time. However, this is a fixture in which going against the grain could prove profitable: six of the last seven head-to-head encounters producing a minimum of 3 match goals, with both of 2019’s pair of meetings obliging.
