Inter Miami – Is this team really improving under Neville?

Last season was, by all accounts, not very good from Inter Miami. Phil Neville’s side lost 17 out of 34 regular season matches, the fifth-most in the entire league, to finish well short of the Eastern Conference play-offs in 11th. They are 15 games deep into MLS 2022 and progress, to be brutally honest, has been minimal at best. The Herons resume in 10th, having incurred more losses thus far than victories (W5 D3 L7).

Even more concerning has to be the sheer lack of firepower. Only Chicago Fire, second-bottom in the East, are finding the net more infrequently than an Inter Miami that has scored no more than once on ten occasions. Which equates to every two in three games, and makes it insanely difficult to win matches on a regular basis. Not that this has stopped them, winning back-to-back prior to a 2-0 loss at Atlanta Utd.

Key Stat: Defeat in Atlanta last time out snapped Inter Miami’s four-game undefeated streak (W2 D2), conceding more to Atlanta United (2) than they had in their three previous MLS matches (1).

Minnesota United – Losing spell has left Loons deflated?

The gloom simply won’t lift for The Loons, who could very well find themselves on the receiving end of a third consecutive MLS defeat unless a solution to their deteriorating form can be found in Miami. Englishman Adrian Heath has overseen six losses in his past nine games as Minnesota United head coach, the most chastening of which the 2-1 home reverse to USL League One side Union Omaha in the US Open Cup.

Heath demand a response from his team and subsequently got it, beating both New England Revs and New York City on xG. They still lost both by the odd goal, 2-1 and 1-0 respectively, to leave The Loons a couple points short of Seattle Sounders and a sought-after top-seven berth. Meanwhile their record so far (W5 D3 L7) is identical to that of Inter Miami, who they go to this weekend trying to avoid a fifth away loss in six.

Key Stat: Minnesota United would hold a half-time lead in each of their three previous MLS away matches, yet only came away with three points from these contests (W1 L2).

Inter Miami Vs Minnesota United Betting Advice

With no previous head-to-heads to work from, predicting which of these teams – both wildly inconsistent yet capable of churning out a winning effort from seemingly out of nowhere – will prevail inside DRV PNK Stadium is far from straightforward. A tentative vote of confidence goes the way of the home side, Inter Miami boasting the superior recent form after going four unbeaten prior to last week’s defeat in Atlanta.

Inter Miami Vs Minnesota United – Key Facts:

  • The teams are meeting for the very first time. Inter Miami are enjoying the better form, however, with one loss in their last five MLS matches (W2 D2 L1).
  • Minnesota United are in the midst of a demoralising period. The Loons are coming off five league defeats in seven (W1 D1) and have lost four of the last five away from home (W1).
  • Just the two teams in MLS have scored fewer than the 16 from 15 games of Minnesota United this season. However one of those teams are Inter Miami, with 14 scored from their 15 games so far.

Minnesota United are coming off five defeats in seven league games, losing four of their past five on the road. The visitors are therefore unappealing. I’m surprised we can get odds against about fewer than three goals though. Both bring modest tallies (Inter Miami average a goal a game, Minnesota Utd 1.07) into this contest while both have seen more matches this season (IM 53%, MU 60%) return Under 2.5 Goals.
