Preview: Reigning K League champions Joenbuk Motors are not having it all their own way in defence of their title. A return of one win through seven matches here at their Jeonju World Cup Stadium has a lot to do with their sluggish season so far – but can they begin to put that right against Suwon Bluewings?

Jeonbuk Motors – Korean champs in title charge mood?

Just four teams have gone toe-to-toe with Ulsan Hyundai in K League competition this season and come away with at least a point, while until the latest round Suwon Bluewings remained the only side to have beaten the long time league leaders. Jeonbuk Motors added their name to an exclusive list therefore following a 3-1 win in Ulsan last Sunday, racing into an unassailable 3-0 lead inside the opening half-hour.

That made it seven straight away wins for manager Kim Sang-sik’s men, who have lost just once in 11 league games (W7 D3 L1) since the middle of March. An eight-point deficit to leaders Ulsan Hyundai, then, largely boils down to Jeonbuk’s shortcomings at Jeonju World Cup Stadium. Winning one K League home game all season (W1 D3 L3), and none of six since a 1-0 scoreline against Suwon during the opening round.

Key Stat: There wasn’t a first-half goal of any kind in five out of the seven K League home matches for Jeonbuk Motors this season. Meanwhile, all four of their home goals were scored in the second period.

Suwon Bluewings – Lack of goals and away form disconcerting?

A 1-0 loss at home to Seoul last Sunday spelt the end for Suwon Bluewing’s most productive spell of 2022, as they saw their four-match unbeaten run (W2 D2) snapped with defeat to opponents they have now lost home and away to this season. However, while their form had admittedly picked up of late, their woes in front of goal hasn’t subsided, scoring no more than once in nine of the past ten K League matches.

The Bluewings’ shortcomings have been more profound on their travels, meanwhile. Trailing the entire league for points (4 – D4 L3) and goals scored (4) away from home. Four of seven said matches would not yield a goal for Lee Byung-Keun’s team, one of three – alongside Deagu and Gangwon – without an away win. The omens are hardly encouraging, though, losing three of four prior visits to Jeonbuk – each time to nil!

Key Stat: All four Suwon Bluewings goals in K League this season have been scored in the second-half. They are yet to score earlier than the 63rd minute in an away fixture.

Jeonbuk Motors Vs Suwon Bluewings Betting Advice

As the only teams to have defeated Korean K League leaders Ulsun Hyundai in league play this year, these two share something in common ahead of their second league meeting of 2022. The first went the way of the favourites, Joenbuk Motors limiting their opponents to seven shots with none on target in a 1-0 victory. Since then, however, it can be argued that the form of both has improved.

Jeonbuk Motors Vs Suwon Bluewings – Key Facts:

  • Seven of the last eight head-to-heads in K League were won by Jeonbuk Motor, whose 1-0 win earlier in the season means they are seeking a fourth consecutive win to nil over Suwon Bluewings.
  • Strengthening the claims for another H2H to nil victory for the home side is the fact six of eight Jeonbuk Motors wins this season, and all six Suwon Bluewings losses, were to nil.
  • Neither bring strong home/away form into this latest meeting though. Jeonbuk Motors are without a win in six as hosts (D3 L3) since winning their opening home match, while Suwon Bluewings are one of three teams yet to win an away fixture (D4 L3).

Jeonbuk Motors are the form side, though, boasting seven wins and just the one loss in 11 league outings. Suwon Bluewings are W3 D2 L3 since losing to the former in April, and D4 L3 on the road for the campaign. That being said, a leap of faith is required as Jeonbuk, last season’s K League winners, posses a rotten home record this term. Winning only one of seven home league games until this point.
