RKC Waalwijk Prediction – Can promoted Waalwijk consolidate ?

A long and hard season last campaign eventually bore fruit for Sunday’s hosts, RKC Waalwijk, as they achieved promotion via a lengthy play-off process.

The home side finished in 8th place last season in the Eerste Divisie which earned them a place in the 1st round of the play-offs.

They accounted for NEC 3-2 on aggregate before recording a 2nd round 3-2 win on aggregate over Excelsior in the 2nd round.

This saw them progress to the 3rd round where they secured promotion to the Eredivisie following a lively 5-4 aggregate win over Go Ahead Eagles – with all goals coming in the 2nd leg!

Waalwijk now need a season of consolidation in this season’s Dutch top flight and the hosts will be hoping they can bounce back with a win today.

An opening day 3-1 defeat in last weekend’s season opener away at Venlo wasn’t the start that manager, Fred Grim, would have envisaged.

It’s been 5 seasons since Waalwijk were last in the Eredivisie but their last stay ended in relegation following a miserable sequence of results at the end of their campaign.

Just 1 win from their last 12 matches overall in the top flight helped contribute to their downfall, and they’ll be desperate to make a better fist of things this time around.

AZ Alkmaar Prediction – Can AZ get back-to-back wins?

The visitors have benefitted from an early start to their season as they’ve progressed in the Europa League with a 2nd qualifying round win over Hacken.

A 3-0 aggregate win over the Swedish club means that AZ are now in the 3rd qualifying round where they held Ukrainian outfit, Mariupol to a 0-0 draw away in the 1st leg.

On Thursday they’ll play host to Mariupol at home, but firstly, AZ make their way to Waalwijk where they’ll be looking to build upon last weekend’s emphatic result.

AZ recorded a 4-0 home win against Fortuna Sittard on the opening weekend of the new Eredivisie season, and will be keen to rack up back-to-back wins here.

The visitors have won 3 of their last 4 matches overall in the Dutch top flight having registered wins at the end of last season against Heracles and PSV.

However, having finished last season without an away win from their last 6 matches on their travels, there’s still work to do on the road for AZ.

An overall away record of 6-4-7 29/28 needs further improvement, but they’ll have a great chance to help rectify this at newcomers, Waalwijk, on Sunday.

Key-Facts – Waalwijk v AZ

  • Waalwijk won just 1 of their last 12 matches in their last campaign in the Eredivisie
  • AZ have won 3 of their last 4 matches in the Dutch top flight
  • AZ have won 4 of the last 6 encounters against Waalwijk

Betting Tips Verdict

Although Waalwijk hold home advantage on Sunday, they’ll be up against it when AZ come to town.
