Preview: A mouthwatering clash at the Dignity Health Sports Parks, in southern California, sees Los Angeles Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City on a collision course as two of the top-three sides in the Western Conference meet for the first time this MLS season. The last time this fixture was played, meanwhile, the hosts ran out emphatic 7-2 victors.

Los Angeles Galaxy – This team simply doesn’t dabble in stalemate?

The Galaxy continue to stalk the Western Conference leaders, namely Sporting Kansas City in second and Seattle Sounders in first, after making it seven wins from ten last time out against the San Jose Earthquakes. Former Manchester United goal-getter Javier Hernandez grabbed two of his team’s goals at PayPal Park in said 3-1 win, in turn becoming the first MLS player to hit double figures for the season.

Chicharito now leads the way in the race for the Golden Boot, on ten, one clear of Seattle’s Raul Ruidaz. However, Hernandez has not managed a home goal in his last two such outings, since scoring for the third successive match inside Dignity Health Sports Park on 15 May in a 2-0 win over Austin FC. Yet LA Galaxy are a team to be feared here, boasting victories in all but one of five MLS home outings in 2021.

That anomaly came in their agonising 2-1 loss to Western Conference leaders and rivals Seattle Sounders, who valiantly fought back from an early deficit to claim the spoils. In fact, two out of three losses this season have been against the Sounders. Emphasising that it takes a pretty special team to get the better of Greg Vanney’s in-form Galaxy, who are still the only MLS side yet to play out a draw this term.

Sporting Kansas City – Vermes still seeking greater consistency on the road?

Courtesy of another spirited performance, Sporting Kansas City produced something which has become the hallmark of their early season fine form – coming from behind to win for the fifth time this season in their latest win over Los Angeles FC. No MLS team in 2021 has secured more wins from a losing position than Peter Vermes’ side, and this is certainly worth paying close attention to on Monday.

That latest victory was enough to keep SKC second in the Western Conference, two points clear of upcoming opponents LA Galaxy – who have played two games less – and trailing leaders Seattle Sounders by as many points. Victory over the former would be a huge signal of their intent then. It would also represent revenge for a chastening 7-2 defeat here in September 2019, their most recent visit to California.

Scoring first has proven a futile task in SKC’s away matches this season, though. Four of five said fixtures (W2 L3) have seen the team opening the scoring go on to lose. Both teams scored in four of these. Therefore, it is difficult envisaging a blank from a side which has so far plundered more goals than any other in MLS this term – though just seven (32%) of their 22 goals were scored on the road.

LA Galaxy Vs Sporting Kansas City Betting Advice

Arguably the standout fixture of the round sees third hosting second in the Western Conference. There promises to be goals. LA Galaxy have only failed to score in two of ten games all season and are yet to blank here in California, whereas Sporting Kansas City are league-leading for goals scored (22 in 12 games), only failing to find the net in one of five away encounters thus far.

LA Galaxy Vs Sporting Kansas City – Key Facts:

  • Taking place in the early hours of Monday morning for those watching from Europe, this latest renewal will mark the first meeting since September 2019 – when LA Galaxy scored SEVEN in a 7-2 victory here in California.
  • LA Galaxy are the only MLS team in 2021 yet to play out a draw (W7 L3). Meanwhile at home they have recorded four wins from five thus far (L1).
  • Sporting Kansas are the most prolific side in MLS this season, with 22 goals scored so far, but only seven (32%) were scored away from home (W2 L3).

So we’ve established there is a strong likelihood of both teams contributing towards the scoring, but which of these is best placed to pick up what could turn out to be a valuable three points in the race for Western Conference supremacy? I would be inclined to back LA Galaxy who are four from five for wins at home this season. Moreover, SKC are a little more susceptible on their travels, losing more often than not so far (W2 L3).
