Friday night brings us further action from the French top flight when hosts, Lille, take on Monaco in Ligue 1 with the home side looking to kick-start their season and topple high-flying Monaco in the process.
However, this may be easier said than done as Lille have made a disappointing start to the new French campaign as they sit fourth from bottom in Ligue 1 with just one league win from their first six matches of the season – that was an opening day 3-0 home win over Nantes, but since then, Lille have slumped to five games without a win.
Defeats to new-boys Strasbourg along with losses to Caen and Guingamp have left the home side dangerously close to the relegation zone and they’ll have their work cut out to get something on Friday night despite holding home advantage at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Just 3 wins from their last 13 on home turf underlines their problems.
By contrast, Monaco have continued to roll along quite nicely despite having lost some key players with the likes of Mendy and Silva going to Chelsea, Bakayoko to Chelsea and highly rated striker Mbappe to rivals PSG ‘on loan’.
However, the provincial club have maintained their momentum throughout this new season, collecting five wins from their first six matches which includes wins at Dijon and Metz, with influential and experienced striker, Falcao (9 goals) providing the spark in attack.
He’s now joined by Jovetic from Inter Milan, and the collective team spirit that still exists within Monaco is perhaps their biggest asset and you just cannot afford to write them off.
I believe Monaco have enough about them to secure the points against a downbeat Lille side.
