Lokomotiv Moscow Preview – Starting a new season as they finished the last?

An opening day success, comfortably dispatching Rubin Kazan on the road when winning a tetchy affair littered with cards, should be something from which Lokomotiv Moscow can build upon as they attempt to go one better than their pair of runners-up finishes in each of the previous two league campaigns. On each occasion they would end up behind Zenit, who are favourites to claim a third successive title.

It was the first time the ‘Steam Locomotives’ notched a win in their opening fixture since the 2017-18 season, when they would ultimately be crowned league champions for a third time in their history. A positive omen perhaps, as has been the start made under their Serbian head coach Marko Nikolic. The 41-year-old remains unbeaten at the helm since arriving at the beginning of June, winning five of nine RPL games.

Lokomotiv Moscow are now unbeaten across twelve top-flight matches (W7 D5), since back-to-back defeats at the back end of last year. A run achieved despite seldom scoring many goals, netting more than once on three occasions. Meanwhile results at home towards the latter stages of 2019-20 were solid rather than spectacular, recording one victory and three draws in their final four encounters at their RZD Arena.

Krasnodar Preview – Keen to atone for last term’s late wobble?

Last season ended in rather disappointing fashion, considering that for much of the campaign this team had performed admirably well in keeping pace with long time leaders and eventual winners Zenit. Not only did they badly fall away in the title race, but Saturday’s opponents would consequently pip them to second spot on account of Krasnodar mustering only three wins across the final nine matches (W3 D2 L4).

With that aforementioned late season demise in mind, Murad Musayev and his team may well feel they have something to prove, to themselves if no-one else. A strong start to the new season will have be seen as crucial therefore. Which was precisely what they managed, chalking up a surprisingly straightforward 3-0 success away to FC Ufa on Sunday more than 48 hours before Lokomotiv were in action.

Krasnodar will hope the additional time for recuperation will aid them this weekend. The Black-Greens seeking to utilise any slight advantage at their disposal to better an opponent which has troubled them in recent meetings. Both league games last season ended in 1-1 scorelines. Meanwhile, it is Lokomotiv Moscow who have dominated on their own patch, winning six of the pair’s nine meetings in Moscow since 2011.

Lokomotiv Moscow Vs Krasnodar Betting Advice

Two of last season’s most consistent performers in the Russian Premier League meet early doors, with this meeting between Lokomotiv Moscow (2nd in 2019-20) and Krasnodar (3rd) unquestionably the standout fixture this weekend. Recent encounters have been tight, with nothing to separate them last time around after successive 1-1 draws, however, Lokomotiv Moscow do tend to prevail as the hosts.

Lokomotiv Moscow Vs Krasnodar – Key Facts

  • After their 2-0 victory away to Rubin Kazan on matchday one, Lokomotiv Moscow have stretched their unbeaten Premier League streak to 12 games (W7 D5).
  • Just a fourth league win in their previous ten fixtures (W4 D2 L4) for Krasnodar, after beating FC Ufa 3-0 away from home on the opening weekend of the new season.
  • Both head-to-head encounters in 2019-20 finished in 1-1 draws. However, Lokomotiv Moscow have won six of the last nine meetings held in Moscow (W6 D2 L1).

Since 2011, when Krasnodar were promoted to the Premier League, these teams have met nine times in Moscow only for Krasnodar to come out on top once – winning 2-1 in 2017 – with the hosts winning six. Five of the last six match-ups, regardless of location, featured fewer than three goals, making Under 2.5 Goals (3/4 with Unibet) appealing. However, there hasn’t been a 0-0 since 2014 (11 games).
