Manchester United – Ole relying on squad in the cup?

Jesse Lingard broke West Ham hearts over the weekend, scoring the all important second in a 2-1 win at London Stadium in Sunday’s enthralling Premier League fixture. It was his second strike of the season. Both were as a second-half substitute, however, and so he could be in line for a rare start Wednesday with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to name a much-changed line-up in the EFL Cup.

Solskjaer will want to keep his core players fresh for more important assignments. This should mean run outs for the likes of Victor Lindelof, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Lingard. They will slot into a side which has lost one competitive match so far this season – losing 2-1 in Switzerland last week to Young Boys – and are kept off the top of the Premier League by goal difference alone.

Key Stat: Only one of Manchester United’s six competitive matches this season hasn’t seen both teams score, with their 1-0 victory over Wolves at Molineux the exception.

West Ham – Hammers made of sterner stuff now?

David Moyes must accept a share of the responsibility for West Ham relinquishing their unbeaten start last time out. With his team trailing 2-1 in the dying embers of their league fixture at home to Man Utd, the Hammers boss brought on long-serving club captain Mark Noble to dispatch a last minute penalty. The 36-year-old’s spot-kick was ultimately saved, as West Ham lost for the first time since early May.

Although that result will have left a sour taste for many, it has nevertheless been a promising few weeks for supporters. The Hammers faithful have already seen their team win in the Europa League group stage for the very first time (2-0 away in Dinamo Zagreb). This on top of collecting eight points out of fifteen in the league. Expect Moyes to freshen things up, though, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Leeds United.

Key Stat: West Ham have scored a first-half goal in five of their six competitive matches this season, only failing to do so in the 0-0 draw away to Southampton in the league.

Manchester United Vs West Ham Betting Advice

With both managers keen to avoid picking up any unnecessary injuries or accumulated fatigue to key players, Wednesday’s re-match of their dramatic Premier League encounter from Sunday is likely to comprise of two completely different casts. However, the problem for David Moyes is that West Ham’s squad simply doesn’t stretch as far as that of his managerial counterpart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • These teams are meeting for the second time within the space of four days, after Manchester United emerging from a dramatic Premier League encounter as 2-1 winners on Sunday.
  • Sunday’s result extended Man Utd’s unbeaten run against West Ham to five in all competitions (W3 D2). Winning 12 of 17 since last losing at home to the Hammers.
  • Manchester United are yet to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford in 2021-22 (2 games) whereas West Ham have scored in each of their two away matches so far.

Even at such short odds, a largely second string Manchester United should have too much at Old Trafford. It is worth noting, though, that their games this season do tend to feature goals at both ends. The Red Devils have recorded just one clean sheet in six competitive fixtures thus far. Moreover, they were extremely fortunate to do so in the 1-0 away win against Wolves last month.
