Marine – Surely another cup upset is beyond Merseysiders?

Featuring in the third round of the FA Cup for only the second time, and first since a 3-1 defeat to Crewe Alexander, now ninth in League One, are Northern Premier League Division One North West outfit Marine AFC. Situated in Crosby, Merseyside, they needn’t look far for inspiration ahead of their tie with Premier League Tottenham, who can recall defeats this season to fellow Merseysiders Everton and Liverpool.

This plum tie is vindication for navigating seven gruelling rounds. The first of those against Barnoldswick Town on 12 September and the last on 29 November here at their 3,185-capacity Rossett Park, where they overcame the odds to edge out Havant & Waterlooeville of National League South. Prior to that, Marine had upset League Two side Colchester United to prevail on penalties inside the Colchester Community Stadium.

What are the chances of another upset occurring? Well, if their mammoth 150/1 quote with Betway about a victory are a reliable barometer, they are very slim indeed. Last seen in competitive action on 15 December, seeing their 10-game unbeaten run comprising seven wins ended by a 1-0 loss at home to Southport in the FA Trophy, manager Neil Young can at least call upon some fresh legs.

Tottenham – Jose expected to mobilise the Spurs reserves?

Having safely navigated a potentially tricky last-four encounter with Championship side Brentford in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, Tottenham now look to reserve their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. Aiding their cause considerably has been the draw, which has unquestionably served them well on this occasion, landing them what should be a straightforward match up against opposition from the eighth tier.

Perhaps the kind draw was needed. Last season, Spurs found this tournament tough going from the get go, requiring replays to oust Middlesbrough and Southampton. That was before labouring to a penalty shootout defeat in the fifth round to Norwich City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And yet, the last time they were eliminated at this stage remains their 2-0 away at North London rivals Arsenal in 2013/14.

Form shouldn’t really be a factor, however, there can be no doubt Tottenham come into this contest not only as the heavy favourites but with momentum in abundance to boot. Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Brentford made it three in four games, a 1-1 draw away to Wolves the exception, to consign back-to-back league defeats sustained before Christmas to top-four rivals Leicester and Liverpool to history.

Marine Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

After a packed December schedule that included eight matches spanning three competitions, and with January set to be no less forgiving, it would come as no surprise were Jose Mourinho to ring the changes at Rossett Park on Sunday. After all, this should be a simple enough assignment, even for a Spurs second string. Expect the likes of Paulo Gazzaniga, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Carlos Vinicius to feature.

Marine Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • Into the third round of the FA Cup for just the second time, Marine have seen their seven fixtures in this season’s competition return an average of just two goals per game.
  • Not since 2013/14 have Spurs failed to qualify for the fourth round. The Premier League side picked up their third win in four competitive games in midweek.
  • Sunday will mark the first meeting between the clubs, with Marine hailing from the eighth tier of the English football pyramid.

Should Mourinho make a raft of changes from the side which booked an EFL Cup final date with Man City in midweek, what remains will be a team lacking goals this season outside of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Carlos Vinicius has three across five Europa League appearances. Elsewhere, though, and it is slim pickings. Meanwhile, Marine‘s FA Cup results until now have averaged 2 goals per game – albeit against lesser opposition than what awaits them on Sunday.
