Preview: A fixture with the potential for significant ramifications towards the top of Ligue 1 sees Marseille entertain Lyon in a clash dubbed ‘Olympico’. Marseille – Managerial switch doing the trick?

L’OM have endured a turbulent first couple months to 2021, culminating in the dismissal of wantaway manager Andre Villas-Boas last month on the back of four straight defeats and amid boardroom acrimony. In the period that followed, an interim manager has been installed to surprisingly great effect, with 62-year-old Moroccan Nasser Larguet overseeing an upturn in results during his six-game spell in charge.

Dmitri Payet’s first Ligue 1 goal since early January salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw at Nantes last time out, while Les Olympiens displayed the sort of character that was conspicuously absent during the final weeks under the previous regime in their most recent outing here at the Stade Velodrome, withstanding some late pressure to register a 3-2 victory over relegation-threatened Nice.

All in all, Marseille are unbeaten in three (W1 D2) – a run which includes progress in the Coupe de France – since losing 2-0 at home to PSG on 7 February. Climbing back to within two points of fifth-place Lens and the European places, while retaining a game in hand. Although the chasm between the leaders is laid bare by the fact Sunday’s opponents Lyon are 17 points better off in second.

Lyon – Near-flawless away run to be extended?

Les Gones were in defiant mood in their latest Ligue 1 outing, proving there were no ill-affects from falling to defeat at home to Montpellier in their previous fixture as they raced into a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 half-time lead on their visit to mid-table Brest. However, the hosts would almost produce one of the comebacks of the season, netting twice but failing to find a third as Lyon clung on for the win.

Despite the nervy nature of that recent success, the three points were fully merited after another exciting and creative performance from a side averaging more than two goals per game across the season thus far. Only PSG, unsurprisingly, are plundering more. Meanwhile, Lyon have now scored two or more in 14 of their previous 20 league games including three of the past four away from home.

It has been on the road where this team has really taken flight this term. Leaders Lille, currently three points better off than Rudi Garcia’s men, boast the division’s most productive away record until now, closely followed by Lyon (W8 D4 L1) who are seeking their eighth away victory in nine (D1) having won each of the last three – against Brest, Dijon and St Etienne – by a 9-2 aggregate.

Marseille Vs Lyon Betting Advice

A match of vital important towards the top of Ligue 1. Marseille, still in the hunt for a European finish, looking to dent Lyon‘s title charge and become the first host to inflict defeat on Rudi Garcia’s team since Montpellier beat them 2-1 at Stade de la Mosson last September. Thereafter Les Gones have won eight of eleven away league games, including the last three.

Marseille Vs Lyon – Key Facts:

  • Sunday’s final ‘Olympico’ of 2020/21 sends title protagonists Lyon (2nd – W16 D7 L3) to Marseille (7th – W10 D8 L7), the latter still harbouring hopes of returning to Europe.
  • Both teams found the back of the net in nine of last eleven home league fixtures for Marseille, and in eight of thirteen away Ligue 1 matches for Lyon in 2020/21.
  • The dominant team with regards to recent meetings has been Lyon, boasting six wins and only one loss from their past twelve Ligue 1 meetings with Marseille.

Unsurprisingly, with a gulf the size of 17 points splitting these teams, it is Lyon who begin Sunday’s Stade Velodrome contest as firm favourites. It is difficult to argue with that, as while Marseille have shown signs of life since a change of manager, facing an in-form, confident side capable of creating any number of scoring chances is a significant step up. Moreover, Lyon boast one loss across the past 12 Ligue 1 meetings (W6 D5 L1).
