Preview: Round 27 of Ligue 1 2021-22 wraps up in the south of France with Marseille and Monaco‘s clash at Stade Velodrome. Both teams are going through barren spells at the moment, making Sunday’s encounter vitally important as both seek out the win that could spark a recovery.

Marseille – L’OM under pressure for second spot?

L’OM’s grip on second place has loosened following successive winless Ligue 1 outings. Dmitri Payet’s ninth league goal of this season – more than any team-mate – from the penalty spot had given Jorge Sampaoli’s men a slender lead last time out in Troyes. However the team fighting for their top-flight status deservedly struck at the death to snatch a draw, leaving Marseille a point clear of Nice and the rest.

Having also been left stunned on their most recent Stade Velodrome outing, in a 2-0 loss to promoted side Clermont, Marseille have now gone multiple league games without winning for only the third time all season. Worryingly, the latter was a continuation of some poor form in front of their fans, with that a fourth winless outing in five (D2 L2) at their south coast residence – a run which has seen them ship eight goals.

Key Stat: After last week’s 1-1 draw away to relegation-threatened Troyes made it five consecutive Ligue 1 games without keeping a clean sheet, Marseille are now on their longest run without a defensive shutout of this season.

Monaco – Kovac’s men lagging behind expectations?

This time last year the Principality side were still very much part of the Ligue 1 title equation, before eventually running out of steam to finish third. It has been quite the fall from grace therefore for Niko Kovac and his team who come into their 27th Ligue 1 outing of 2021-22 closer to relegation than the summit. A current three-match winless spell, scoring only twice, seeing them slip to ninth place.

Not even the scoring expertise of Yissam Ben Yeddar, the Frenchman leading the way in Ligue 1 on 15 goals, has been enough to carry a group which has massively underachieved so far this campaign. Kovac won’t appreciate another road outing either, despite losing last time out at Stade Louis II. Monaco have one win from their last eight away league games (D3 L4), failing to score in five of these contests.

Key Stat: All three Monaco away league victories this term have come against sides currently no higher than 14th (Angers, Clermont, Troyes).

Marseille Vs Monaco Betting Advice

A deserved 2-0 victory in Monaco in September will give Marseille belief they can go on and complete a rare league double, last managing the feat in 2007/08. As will a seven position gap, comprising nine points, separating the teams ahead of Sunday’s curtain closer at the Stade Louis II. Yet some questionable home form – both recently but also in this very fixture – means L’OM are far from assured of the three points.

Marseille Vs Monaco – Key Facts:

  • A brace of goals from Senegal international striker Bamba Dieng earned Marseille a 2-0 win when the sides met first time around this season. L’OM have now won three of the past four Ligue 1 meetings (L1), also winning last season’s corresponding fixture 2-1.
  • Marseille have toiled at home of late, though, winning one of the past five Stade Velodrome contests (D2 L2). They were beaten 2-0 by promoted Clermont in the latest of those.
  • Monaco are arguably in even worse shape on their travels, however. Niko Kovac’s side boast one win across eight previous Ligue 1 away matches (D3 L4) and are yet to beat a team currently higher than 14th on the road this term.

Marseille have won only once in six home meetings versus Monaco, who were unbeaten in five (W1 D4) prior to a 2-1 loss last season in which the visitors dominated with the ball and created more openings. Interestingly, all of those encounters saw both teams score. This hasn’t been a recent phenomenon either, with eleven straight meetings in Marseille having concluded with neither side retaining their clean sheet.
