Millwall have very recent memories of upsetting Premier League opposition in the FA Cup and will be looking to do similar when Sheffield United visit The Den on Saturday.

Millwall Preview – Can Millwall continue their excellent run and repeat their cup exploits of last season?

Millwall enjoyed a productive cup run last season and they will be out to do something similar this year. The Championship side made it all the way to the quarter-final stage only to lose out to Brighton on penalties, in a game where they were two goals up at home. Previous to that, Millwall had knocked out Everton in dramatic circumstances in one of the most memorable games of last season’s competition.

Their first game of this year’s FA Cup was another strong performance as they saw off Newport in comfortable fashion. That win means Millwall have not been beaten at home in this competition since 2015, a total of 11 games. It’s an indication of how strong they are at The Den.

A fair bit has changed since last season at Millwall, though. Neil Harris has moved on and been replaced with Gary Rowett. There has been an improvement in their performances and results, leading them to eighth place in the Championship and only two points outside the playoffs.
They are six unbeaten coming into this game and have lost only one of their last 15 games. Confidence will be high coming into this one.

Sheffield United Preview – Will Chris Wilder prioritise the FA Cup and field a stronger team than in the previous round?

Chris Wilder has been mentioned as a potential manager of the year candidate and it’s well deserved considering the job he’s done. There was uncertainty, as there always is when a team are promoted to the Premier League, as to how Sheffield United would perform. Wilder and his players have answered that in emphatic fashion. United sit in eighth spot well into the second half of the campaign and the only one of the promoted teams who have no relegation worries.

Much the opposite as they are one of the sides in contention for a European finish. That would be a remarkable achievement but one you couldn’t put past them.

How Sheffield United approach the FA Cup from this game will be interesting. Wilder used the previous round against non-league AFC Fylde to rest his whole first team in a game they just edged 2-1. Doing that against such a lowly ranked team at home is a different decision compared to going to one of the most intimidating stadiums in English football against a team who are flying.

The traditionalists would point to the fact that because the Blades do not have relegation worries they should be targeting the FA Cup and an extended cup run. Whether or not Wilder perceives it the same way remains to be seen.

Millwall vs Sheffield United Betting Advice

In a pretty bland fourth round draw this tie looks ripe for a shock. Millwall have all the circumstances in their favour to take another Premier League scalp. They are in good form, are at home and coming up against a team who made wholesale changes in the previous round. Wilder knows full well what to expect when he takes his team south. Sheffield United won 3-2 on their last visit to the Den – a game where they scored two in the latter stages.

Key Facts – Millwall vs Sheffield United Betting Tip

  • Millwall knocked out Everton at the same stage last season en route to the quarter-finals
  • Sheffield United made 11 changes for their third round win against non-league AFC Fylde
  • The hosts have not lost an FA Cup tie in 90 minutes since 2015 – a total of 11 matches

Cup ties are always difficult to weigh up for a number of reasons. It means that any betting selection should be taking with some caution but as I’ve alluded to above, Millwall definitely target this competition and they are in brilliant form at the moment. As such, I’m taking them to get the better of Sheffield United on Saturday.
