Minnesota United – Loons flying in the West?

Since a run of one win in eight, accruing four of a possible 24 points from the beginning of May through to late June that featured two separate losing streaks of three games, The Loons have seriously taken off. Victory last time out in Houston against the Dynamo made it six unbeaten (W5 D1) for the Adrian Heath-managed side, who are now up into the dizzying heights of third place in the Western Conference.

What made this latest triumph all the more impressive, however, was achieving it without star man Emanuel Reynoso (9 goals/3 assists in 21 apps in 2022). He wasn’t missed as Minnesota United chalked up a third road win in succession – although, admittedly, they were fortunate to do so based on xG (HOU 1.65 – 0.82 MIN). In fact, their underlying numbers for the season aren’t nearly impressive (1.2 xGF/1.5 xGA).

Key Stat: Minnesota United have seen Over 2.5 Goals in six of their eight previous MLS games, scoring 2+ in five of their current six-match unbeaten stretch.

Portland Timbers – Chopping down all challengers?

The Timbers would make the end-of-season play-offs in each of the past five campaigns and are beginning to state their case for a sixth straight inclusion. By coming from behind to defeat San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 at Providence Park, Giovanni Savarese’s men would pick up their fourth win in six while also stretching their unbeaten run to seven (W4 D3). It has seen them make serious ground in the Western standings.

On the back of this recent spell – winning more matches across their last six league games they had across their first 16 games (3) to start the 2022 season – the Portland Timbers are up to seventh in the Western Conference, sitting in the last MLS Cup Playoff berth. However, a recent 3-0 win away at Seattle Sounders was something of an anomaly, having previously been winless (D4 L3) on their travels since April.

Key Stat: Portland Timbers have played to seven score draws this season, with that the joint-most – tied with Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union – in MLS 2022.

Minnesota United Vs Portland Timbers Betting Advice

In their ten previous MLS encounters, only once would Minnesota and Portland share the points in a drawn game. I’m sticking my neck out by claiming that might change inside Providence Park Saturday evening. With both out to preserve long unbeaten runs (Minnesota Utd not lost in six, Portland Timbers undefeated in seven), this could be one of those games where both sides decide a point is better than none.

Minnesota United Vs Portland Timbers – Key Facts:

  • In 2021, Minnesota United won two out of three clashes with Portland Timbers who, in four previous visits to this stadium, are yet to win inside Providence Park (lost all four).
  • Just one of Minnesota United’s last six home games saw Over 2.5 Goals. However, four of Portland Timbers’s last five road encounters would see three or more goals.
  • The Portland Timbers are a tough nut to crack away from home this season (W2 D5 L4), with four of five away drawn games this MLS campaign being scoring ones.

Either way, it should be fun. Minnesota United have seen three or more goals in all but one of six prior league games, but they would also manage one clean sheet across their last six outings as hosts. Both teams scored in six of the past eight matches where Portland Timbers were involved, including five of six prior road games. Moreover, three of the pair’s four previous encounters seen both teams among the scoring.
