Preview: That self-belief which had been missing of late returned on Thursday , even if there was an element of fortune about Minnesota United‘s return to winning ways. Now, the Loons go in search of successive MLS victories for only the third time all season, hosting a Real Salt Lake riding high in the Western Conference.

Minnesota United – Loons coming into this game on a high?

The Loons celebrated their first win in a competitive setting for over a month when going to Dignity Health Sports Park, home of LA Galaxy, and leaving with a hard-earned – if not fully deserved – three points. Adrian Heath, who recently signed a new long-term deal to stay on as head coach, will have been a relieved man. Seeing his side prevail 3-2 and end a run of four straight defeats in all competitions.

In truth, they should have lost to the Galaxy who comfortably created more and better chances throughout the contest (xG from that game: LAG 2.82 – 1.39 MIN). Some times you need a bit of luck and Minnesota certainly got theirs, which was probably due – having scored the opening goal now in their past three MLS matches, this represented their first win in league play since a 2-1 success at FC Dallas on May 22.

Key Stat: Minnesota United delivered only their second league win for nine matches (W2 D1 L6) last time out against LA Galaxy. They’ve not won a home fixture, however, since a 3-0 success over Chicago Fire on April 23 (D1 L2 since).

Real Salt Lake – Lack of threat on the road big concern?

A return of one win from the last three league games has resulted in Real Salt Lake losing sight of Los Angeles FC, who simply aren’t dropping many points and are now five points clear of anyone else in the Western Conference. Pablo Mastroeni’s men are prominent nonetheless, seven points back from the summit in third, and still in reasonable form having lost just one of the last six MLS fixtures (W4 D1).

Four of those fixtures being at their hub in Salt Lake City is telling, though, as on the road they are still to record a victory over a Western Conference contemporary. RSL are W2 D3 L4 away from home this year, however, both successes were against foes from the East in the shape of New England and CF Montreal. Take these games away and they’ve two points and as many goals from five away contests vs the West.

Key Stat: Real Salt Lake won both away league games this year in which they scored more than once (2-3 vs New England, 1-2 vs CF Montreal) but none of the six in which they didn’t (D2 L4).

Minnesota United Vs Real Salt Lake Betting Advice

It says everything about Real Salt Lake’s issues on the road that, despite being seven places and eight points superior to their opponents in the Western Conference, it is Minnesota United who begin as favourites to collect three points. The latter should bounce into this fixture as well after finally keeping their noses in front when recording a first MLS win in four (L3) last time out versus the Galaxy in Los Angeles.

Minnesota United Vs Real Salt Lake – Key Facts:

  • Ahead of Sunday’s (Monday in the UK) fixture at Allianz Field, there were seven positions and eight points separating Minnesota United in 10th (W6 D3 L8 for the season) and Real Salt Lake in third (W8 D5 L4) in the Western Conference.
  • Real Salt Lake are unbeaten in three head-to-heads (W1 D2) and earned their first away win at the fourth attempt (D1 L2 previously) in March of last year, a 2-1 win whereby Minnesota got off twice as many goal attempts (23 to 11) but still lost.
  • Minnesota United are W3 D2 L3 across their eight MLS home outings this season whereas Real Salt Lake are W2 D3 L4 on their travels.

Minnesota are another of those sides fiercely competitive in their own backyard. In eight MLS home games this season, the Loons never succumbed by more than one goal – and they’ve played some good teams, too. Meanwhile, RSL are W2 D3 L4 on the road. Losing four of the last six said fixtures (three ‘to nil’), not scoring more than once 78% of the time away from home this season.

I’ll invest some faith in the hosts then, who are 8/15 Draw No Bet. Those odds can be boosted slightly when adding Under 3.5 Goals, which landed in all six Minnesota United home wins this season.
