Preview: After their contest in Andorra failed to produce a goal, expectations are understandably low ahead of their rematch in Moldova. The hosts would win four of seven prior meetings, though, and so will fancy their own chances – if few others do – of earning a rare victory on home soil here at the Stadionul Zimbru, Chisinau.

Moldova – Home form massive cause for concern?

A calamitous performance between the goal posts saw Moldova reluctantly relinquish their unbeaten tag in the Nations League, now W1 D1 L1 in Group D1. They are now long odds to gain promotion back to League C having been demoted from the competition’s third tier in 2020. Unirea Dej goalkeeper Dorian Railean reportedly at fault for three of the four goals his team conceded in the recent 4-2 home loss to Latvia.

Prior to that, however, Serghei Clescenco and his players had been enjoying their best spell for three years. Having sustained ten consecutive defeats, a couple of away wins – both ‘to nil’, in Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan – preceded last week’s goalless draw in Andorra as they went three unbeaten. Their most recent victory in a competitive home game, though, dates back to 2018. Although that was against Andorra.

Key Stat: Moldova lost each of their six previous competitive home matches, conceding two or more in each of these games, since a 1-1 draw with Faroe Islands in a World Cup qualifier in March 2021.

Andorra – Victory in Chisinau would be collector’s item?

Victory last time out over Liechtenstein – a game which saw all three goals in a 2-1 win for the hosts, Andorra, scored inside the final 12 minutes of the second half – continued a strong 2022 for the nations ranked 153. That, by the way, is 27 places higher than opponents Moldova, who they have now beaten just the once in seven meetings (D2 L4) after the pair played out a forgettable goalless draw on Matchday 1.

Head coach Koldo Alvarez has overseen three wins in Andorra’s past five encounters (D1 L1). Their only loss during this otherwise purple patch being the 3-0 scoreline in Latvia, a result which has contributed to them falling five points behind the Latvians in the battle for promotion in Group D1. Victory in Moldova is imperative therefore, if unlikely, having beaten only San Marino in their past 18 away matches (D3 L14).

Key Stat: Andorra would not score more than once in 14 of the past 18 away internationals, managing five – three of which came in their 3-0 win over the world’s lowest ranked nation, San Marino – across their last ten away fixtures.

Moldova Vs Andorra Betting Advice

Separating sides ranked 153 and 180 isn’t easy. For starters, there was literally no separating them in their first encounter of this group stage campaign – a dour 0-0 stalemate in Andorra la Vella, in which Andorra played against ten men for the entirety of the second half but still couldn’t find a breakthrough. In fact, Moldova finished the contest with a larger share of the possession, more shots and more shots on target.

Moldova Vs Andorra – Key Facts:

  • After losing four of the first five head-to-heads (D1), Andorra are now unbeaten across a pair of meetings (W1 D1) with Moldova. The sides contested a goalless affair in Andorra on Matchday 2 of this Nations League campaign.
  • Both teams hold identical records in Group D1 (W1 D1 L1). The pair would both conceded four goals but Moldova’s four scored is twice that of Andorra.
  • However, both sides have cause for concern ahead of their rematch. Moldova haven’t won a competitive home game since 2018 (D2 L11 since) while Andorra’s sole win across 18 away internationals (D3 L14), going back to March 2018, came in San Marino.

In terms of form, both managers will have taken a lot of encouragement. Moldova were unbeaten in three before losing an entertaining contest at this venue to Latvia, while Andorra have only been beaten the once in five. That, too, was to Latvia who comfortably sit atop the group. Andorra’s atrocious away record, losing seven of the last eight, is a concern. However the odds about a second successive drawn H2H are too big.
